Description

The proposed project responds to the need to strengthen and promote green elements in urban developments, with the aim of improving air quality. The main intention of the project is to renovate and revitalize the green roof of the Faculty of Economics and Administration building located in the city district of Brno-Pisárky on Lipová Street. This measure is directly linked to the recommendations of the emerging Action Plan for improving air quality in Brno, which is being developed within the framework of the ongoing Tromso Call project.

Summary of project results

The project was created as a follow-up to the action plan and strategy to strengthen the air quality of the city of Brno, when in the courtyard of the Faculty of Economics and Administration of Masaryk University was a green roof from the 1990s, which was in a very unsatisfactory condition and did not serve its purpose. The aim of the project was therefore to completely revitalize it, which expanded the green space in the city, increased the positive impact on the air and made it more accessible to students, staff and visitors of the faculty. We also used this opportunity to promote green measures in architecture from the position of a public institution, which was another project objective.

As part of the project, we completely revitalized and opened the green roof of the Faculty of Economics and Administration of Masaryk University for its students, employees and visitors. Since the faculty is a public building, people from the surrounding area can also use this roof. The green roof itself then has a positive impact on the environment in its surroundings, as it helps reduce dust particles (the faculty is located in a congested area), reduces the heat island effect in the city and reduces rainwater runoff. During implementation, we also promoted green measures in accordance with the project''s communication plan.

The first output of the project was the creation of the project documentation of the green roof in the stage for the selection of the contractor, which was created in cooperation with us by the design architectural office of Mrs. Steinhauser. Subsequently, we launched a public tender for a general contractor for the construction work. Once this was completed, landscaping work began, including the incorporation of other elements (green benches, sidewalks...) and the planting of new vegetation. The final beneficiaries and target groups thus gained a quality and valuable space to spend time in the faculty building. Moreover, thanks to the project, we have improved the environment in Brno thanks to the proven positive effects of green roofs on their surroundings (reduction of dust particles, reduction of heat islands, rainwater retention). During the implementation, presentation of the implemented measure to the public was carried out according to the communication plan, and students and employees of the faculty were also involved in the promotional activities.

The project was significant both for the target group (students, employees and visitors of the Faculty of Economics and Administration of MU), who gained valuable space for spending their free time at the faculty, and for the inhabitants of Brno, as it improved the environment in an area with intensive car traffic.
