Description

The key aim of this project is to increase the cleaning capacity of trees by removing parasitic mistletoe on the territory of the city of Karviná(applicant) and the city of Český Těšín (partner of the project). The project is aimed to ensuring the overall operational safety of existing trees that potentially threaten properties and the human lives. At the same time, it aims to prolong the life of grown trees in the given habitats, thus preserving the existing microhabitats and preserving the biodiversity of the species attached to them.

Summary of project results

The Moravian-Silesian Region is one of the areas in the Czech Republic most affected by degraded air quality. Within this region, the statutory city of Karviná and the city of Český Těšín rank among the worst in terms of air pollution, comparable to Prague. These cities have been grappling with this issue for many years, focusing not only on implementing new green infrastructure but also on addressing challenges like the pervasive mistletoe infestation, which threatens or outright destroys existing vegetation.

Municipalities are thus tasked with a dual mission: expanding green infrastructure while simultaneously combatting the mistletoe invasion. This parasitic plant poses a significant risk to the most valuable elements of urban greenery, undermining their ability to contribute to air quality improvements. The project developed by the cities followed the outcomes of the CLAIRO project, which included an extensive public opinion survey within the Moravian-Silesian Region. Among the survey''s findings, one of the most supported measures for improving air quality was the planting, maintenance, and expansion of public greenery. Another key activity identified was the systematic removal of mistletoe, as highlighted in the action plans of the i-AIRPs project (Tromsø Challenge), which were adopted by Karviná and Český Těšín.

The project''s primary goal was achieved through the cooperation of both cities: maintaining and ideally enhancing the air-cleaning capacity of trees in these municipalities. Karviná and Český Těšín have long been at the forefront of addressing air pollution challenges, alongside Prague. The project specifically aimed to improve the cleaning capacity of urban trees by removing parasitic mistletoe and ensuring the operational safety of existing trees that might pose risks to property and human lives. Moreover, the initiative sought to prolong the lifespan of mature trees, preserving critical microhabitats and supporting biodiversity in the affected areas.

The implementation of this project has had a profoundly positive impact on both cities. Environmentally, it has extended the life of existing trees, ensuring they retain their air-filtering capacity. For residents, the project has contributed to healthier urban greenery, resulting in cleaner air and improved living conditions. By tackling both air pollution and biodiversity preservation, the cities of Karviná and Český Těšín have made significant strides toward creating more sustainable and livable urban environments.
