Description

Aims of the initiative is to strengthen cooperation with NIBIO and to know more about an experience of NIBIO in work with soil data and soil mapping, legislation, and information systems. The international soil classification is used over the years in Norway’s national system that will provide a valuable experience for Latvia. The initiative will contribute to the implementation of the project E2SOILAGRI, too.

Planned activities. During the exchange visit, NIBIO will share expertise on the following topics: soil mapping (not including field works); soil data (Norwegian Soil Information System)

Summary of the results

The initiative helped strengthen collaboration between NIBIO and the involved organizations in Latvia, as well as develop new entry points and perspectives for future cooperation. The implementation of the initiative facilitated direct contacts between various NIBIO sectors and Latvian experts.

The initiative allowed experts from both countries to exchange experiences, enhancing their capacity and competence in soil data matters. Latvian experts improved their knowledge of the administrative and camera-related aspects of soil mapping processes, Norway''s soil information system, its structure, databases, and the technical solutions used in its development, as well as thematic soil maps. NIBIO experts gained information about the land management system used in agriculture and soil carbon monitoring in Latvia.

Based on the information obtained through the initiative, proposals were prepared for the improvement of Latvia''s soil information system.
