Description

The answers and actions of the public health and state in Slovenia are not meeting the needs of the young people and neglecting the newest scientific discoveries on the social aspects and bio- psycho-social model of mental health. The public services have too long waiting lines and focus on just a medical approach to the problem. With this project we will form an intense workshop for youth with mental health or emotional distress experience on the basis of the technique Rainbow of desire from the method Theatre of The Oppressed. The production of the workshop will be an advocacy video that will represent youth voice and demands on the social and neglected aspects of mental health. With the  outh we will do a plan to spread the video with the message widely on social networks, youth centers, etc. The video will be also shown at the public round table event with youth and experts. We will open a public interdisciplinary experts discussion on youth  emands and the  social responsibility for mental health. We expect to form clear statements, initiatives, movements and joined campagne. Young people will be empowered, active in forming their voice and having more opportunities to join and form self- help and other support groups. The project will raise awareness on the social aspects and social responsibility for mental health of youth targeting a wider public audience. The result will be de-stigmatization of youth mental health and a greater sense of belonging and responsibility to the community. The result would be forming new solutions; public and accessible  programs with the  participation of youth experience and newest scientific findings. The project will be led by KUD Transformator (NGO). Partners in the project are Faculty of Education University of Ljubljana - department of social pedagogy, Faculty of social  work, Non-formal group of students and post-grads of Reading club of critical psychology.

Summary of project results

Mental health of youth has been a topical issue for too long. The answers and actions of the public health and state in Slovenia are not meeting the needs of the young people and neglecting the newest scientific discoveries on the social aspects and bio-psycho-social model of mental health. The public services have too long waiting lines and focus on just a medical approach to the problem. Other therapeutic approaches are led by the private sector and therefore not accessible to the vulnerable, non-privileged youth. The public medical system is collapsing and this is an alarming state for the youth in mental and emotional distress. With the youth we will do a plan to spread the video with the message widely on social networks, youth centers, etc. The video will be also shown at the public round table event with youth and experts. We will open a public interdisciplinary experts discussion on youth demands and the social responsibility for mental health. We expect to form clear statements, initiatives, movements and joined campagne.

Within the project activites were carried out 20 hours of in-depth workshop using the Rainbow of Wishes technique, prepared of an advocacy video Mental health is a human right!, organized a joint roundtable with partners.

The key achievement of the project is certainly reaching young people, experts and opening a public debate on a silenced social issue. The lecture hall where the round table took place was packed with students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Arts. Experts who were unable to attend the round table also reacted to the round table. The campaign and roundtable thus raised awareness about the connection between social justice and mental health and established connections between professional actors and young people.
