Description

PIPELIFE Bilateral initiative intends to promote the collaboration between IST-ID, SINTEF, EQUINOR and University of Stavanger, for the creation of a universal framework for risk-based maintenance of pipelines. This Bilateral initiative aims to improve the energy security by reducing the risks of failure of gas pipelines through the adoption of risk-based maintenance policies and propose a general framework, adaptable to the transformation of the global energy system, which can be applied in the future to predict the degradation pattern and maintenance needs of hydrogen pipelines (promoting a

Summary of the results

This initiative enhances the reliability and efficiency of critical energy infrastructure by developing innovative tools for the predictive maintenance of gas and hydrogen pipelines. This contributes to a more stable and sustainable energy supply, essential for economic growth in Portugal and Norway.

Additionally, the initiative aligns with global decarbonization efforts by supporting green hydrogen infrastructure, integrating renewable energy sources, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering economic growth through job creation and investment in renewable energy.

It also strengthens bilateral relations through knowledge transfer and capacity building, solidifying collaboration between Norwegian and Portuguese institutions. The joint development of predictive maintenance models has led to academic and professional advancements, including the preparation of four scientific papers. Collaboration with Equinor has provided new insights into industry data, revealing previously unknown degradation trends.

Looking ahead, the team has submitted a project proposal to the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) with the University of Stavanger as a consultant partner and plans to propose additional projects in upcoming Horizon calls and in Norway, ensuring long-term cooperation and mutual benefits.
