Description
The species richness of Viljandi''s public green areas is small and the general appearance is simple. In order to increase the species richness, we have planned to build flower gardens with different types of spring flowers on public lawns, with the aim of diversifying the urban space with frost-resistant bulbous flowers in spring time, which is currently poor in colour. Outdoor learning is one of the many ways to diversify teaching methods and bring children closer to a natural learning environment and to real everyday life. Many lessons are taught outdoors on the education campus of Viljandi Hobby School and Viljandi Town Centre School. The campus does not have an outdoor classroom with a roof and walls.
The aim of the project is to contribute to the mitigation of climate change and adaption to the effects of climate change in Viljandi. In course of the project, we will implement activities that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, increase their sequestration, and increase the resilience of society and ecosystems to climate change as the vulnerability due to the effects of climate change increases.
As a result of the project, the following activities will be implemented: 1) flower gardens of different types of spring flowers will be established in the territory of the town of Viljandi in the parks and along the town entrance roads to the extent of 2880 m2; 2) 5 public drinking water points will be installed in Viljandi town spaces; 3) an outdoor classroom will be built on the property at C. R. Jakobsoni 47a on the education campus of Viljandi Hobby School and Viljandi Town Centre School, where students will acquire an environmental and climate education;
Summary of project results
The species richness of Viljandi''s public green areas is small and the general appearance is simple. The aim was to increase the species richness (biodiversity). The increas of heat waves is one of the main risks to the climate in the future and to make drinking water more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists during many cultural and sporting events, drinking water taps should be installed. And to popularize outdoor learning and to bring children closer to natural learning, an outdoor classroom will be built.
Six different locations in Viljandi received flower meadows (appr. 260 m2). Also 6 public drinking water taps were installed in the city of Viljandi. And an outdoor learing class was built on the territory of Viljandi Hobby School.
The visitors and inhabitants of Viljandi can be less impacted by changing climate through the nature-based solution activities implemented with this project. Greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere are also reduced and the biodiversity in Viljandi has increased.
And with a new outdoor learing class students in Viljandi Hobby School and Viljandi Town Centre School (appr 1000 students) will acquire an environmental and climate education through outdoor learning.
