Description

The project''s primary goal is to empower SMEs, equipping them with the knowledge and competencies required to implement sustainable business models, green innovation, circular economy, and Corporate Social Responsibility into their operations. The adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance principles will serve as a catalyst for SMEs to take a structured approach to these vital areas.  Several key benefits will be realized:

  • Enhanced understanding of ESG aspects relevant to their business, fostering the capacity to recognize and implement ESG practices.
  • Preparedness for Directive compliance and the ability to maintain competitiveness throughout the value chains.
  • The establishment of connections between process improvements and non-financial reporting.

The project will achieve sustainability in economic, environmental, and social dimensions:

Economic Sustainability: The project will contribute to economic sustainability in two ways. Cleantech Bulgaria Foundation will gain the necessary expertise in ESG training, offering it as a service beyond the project''s duration. Simultaneously, the ESG framework will provide the skills and knowledge needed within the companies to drive overall improvements in their businesses, thus positively impacting their economic performance.

Environmental Sustainability: The project centers its efforts on enhancing the competencies of Bulgarian enterprises in the Green Industry sector by implementing ESG reporting. One of the core pillars of ESG is the environment, which will empower companies to adopt sustainable business models, green innovation, and circular economy practices, among others.

Social Sustainability: The project has a clear focus on ensuring social sustainability, requiring companies to incorporate social considerations into their business models, including matters like gender diversity, employee turnover, non-discrimination, child protection, and human rights.

Summary of project results

The "Ready for the ESG Challenges" project, led by Cleantech Bulgaria Foundation, aimed to address the following challenges:

  1. Preparation for ESG Compliance:

    • SMEs in Bulgaria faced challenges in adapting to the emerging requirements of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. Many lacked awareness, understanding, and capacity to integrate ESG principles into their business models, posing a risk to their competitiveness as compliance becomes mandatory under the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
  2. Knowledge and Capacity Gaps:

    • Bulgarian enterprises, particularly SMEs and start-ups, struggled to navigate the complex ESG landscape due to insufficient knowledge about regulatory frameworks, reporting standards, and best practices.
  3. Competitiveness and Value Chain Pressure:

    • SMEs risked losing competitiveness in global value chains as larger companies—already subject to ESG standards—began requiring compliance from their suppliers to meet their own obligations.
  4. Sustainability Challenges:

    • Many SMEs lacked structured approaches to sustainable business practices, including green innovation, circular economy, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which limited their ability to contribute to environmental and social sustainability goals.
  5. Limited Access to ESG Resources and Expertise:

    • Local resources, training, and expertise in ESG reporting and practices were scarce, leaving SMEs without adequate support to build the necessary capabilities.
  6. Need for Bilateral Knowledge Sharing:

    • Bulgarian enterprises needed access to best practices and expertise from countries like Norway, which had already advanced significantly in ESG implementation and compliance under frameworks like the Norwegian Transparency Act.

By addressing these challenges, the project sought to enable Bulgarian SMEs to build their capacity for ESG compliance, adopt sustainable business practices, and enhance their competitiveness in global markets.
