Description
The current project aims to provide support to Ukrainian refugees who enter the country at the Sighet border crossing point (Maramures county). The support provided by the project involves psycho-emotional support and products of strict necessity (food and hygienic-sanitary products). The implementation of this project is necessary and falls under the category of quick response type grants, because SAMR is among the only organizations active for this purpose at the Sighet border crossing point (Maramures county). The psycho-emotional support will be provided by 2 volunteer specialists (social worker or psychologist - contribution in kind to the organization), 2 translators - secondary education (people who will be remunerated from the project budget).Concretely, the project proposes the following actions: welcoming refugees and supporting them in a specially designed space that allows an efficient assessment of their needs and providing food, sanitary products and psycho-emotional support and/or supporting refugees in buses. The children will benefit from relaxation activities and games to distract them from the war. The specialists involved (social worker/psychologist) will intervene in this crisis situation to mitigate the consequences of the experience they went through through specific intervention methods and techniques. Translators have an essential contribution because they make these activities possible. Once the individual/family needs are identified, the project team mobilizes and in collaboration with the local authorities/ISU and other NGOs identifies solutions to the needs: accommodation, transport, temporary/permanent living space, temporary/permanent workplace. and so on The refugees who enter the country in an organized way by buses choose to transit the country and go to other countries in Europe. In these buses, the project team will be allowed access to provide medical, psychoemotional, food and hygienic-sanitary support for adults and children.
Summary of project results
The project aimed to provide support to Ukrainian refugees who enter the country at the Sighet border crossing
point (Maramures county).
From 01 May to 31 October 2023, through the project #SupportForUkraine at the Sighet border crossing point (Maramures county) the Maltese Relief Service in Romania provided support to Ukrainian refugees who crossed the border at the Sighet . Ukrainian refugees still needed help as war continues to intervenĕ in people''s lives. Parents with children, families, sick people in need of medicine cross the border not for a better life, but to be safe, to protect the lives of their children. Their first contact in a foreign country was with the Maltese team and during this time the team was aware of the responsibility this entailed.
The Maltese team provided information and psycho-emotional support to the refugees, as well as covering basic needs in addition, from its own resources (food, hygiene and sanitation items). In the 6 months of the project SAMR managed to support over 7500 people, giving them a hope of safety. Both the information given and the emotional support/donations helped to establish an emotional as well as physical balance for each refugee.
The Maltese team provided information and psycho-emotional support to 7512 refugees, During these 6 months the collaboration with state authorities, but also with NGOs involved in the refugee crisis, was a strong point to be highlighted. The provision of support was based on the needs of the refugees, and on the basis of this assessment, the necessary support - information, direct help and psycho-emotional counselling - had a major
impact.
The first response intervention helped re-establish an emotional and physical comfort for each refugee.
Also, the model was documented in an document - Guidelines for the work with refugees
