Description
In the current conditions, the VH laboratories (Povodí Moravy, s.p.) do not have a suitable infrastructure that would enable the analysis of pollutants according to the List of priority and candidate priority substances and the environmental quality standards (EQS) for them set/proposed and the List of PFAS and the corresponding RPF for conversion to PFOA/ Call3A/with the proposed limit of quantification. The project aims to achieve a new reduction of the detection limits or limits of quantification for established analytical determinations, which requires the implementation of new procedures on the acquired instrument. The main objective of the project is to include the monitored new substances in the water monitoring programme with the output of data export to the Arrow database and evaluation of the obtained data according to the legislation. This objective and output can be achieved by routine measurement of the new substances and by ensuring appropriate technical infrastructure, including the development of improved analytical methods, their validation and verification in the conditions of the applicant.
Summary of project results
The implementation of the project was important in terms of establishing a suitable infrastructure in the laboratory of Povodí Moravy, s.p., which enabled the analysis of pollutants according to the List of Priority and Candidate Priority Substances and the environmental quality standards set/designed for them. The project ensures the monitoring and introduction of new substances into the surface water monitoring programme and the evaluation of the obtained data according to the legislation.
By acquiring a liquid chromatograph with a mass detector and other sample pretreatment equipment, the laboratories of Povodí Moravy, s.p. can analyse selected indicators according to Tables 1 and 2 of Call 3A with the proposed limit of determination. The laboratories have introduced a new method and at the same time optimised the existing methods for the analysis of substances according to Call 3A (except for the exception - due to the unavailability of the standard substance C6O4 (1190931-41-9)). The sensitivity of the method has also been significantly increased, enabling the capture of pollutants even at very low concentrations, which should be considered significant in terms of environmental burden. The project activities have contributed to the improvement of the environment.
The liquid chromatograph has greatly accelerated and facilitated the necessary analyses as well as the range of possible indicators to be monitored. Thanks to this instrument, not only the monitoring capabilities of the water management laboratories of Povodí Moravy, s.p. have been improved, but also the speed and quality of information provided to other partners on the ecological and chemical status and ecological potential of the surface water body. At the same time, it ensured compliance with possible requirements for monitoring and assessment of water quality and status at the level of European and national legislation.
The benefits of the project were the acquisition of modern instrumentation, the development of methods for monitoring micropollutants in the aquatic environment, the extension of qualifications of tribal laboratory staff, educational activities associated with promotion, cooperation between the NF - SFŽP and PM. Results of own measurements will be provided to the national ARROW database. A new method for PFAS determination was successfully accredited in March 2024 and the existing method was expanded to include new analytes. Due to the properties of these substances, their determination has been included in the monitoring of surface waters within the scope of Povodí Moravy, s.p. and in selected analyses of drinking water.
