Description

In 2018, ELDIA took the first step to meet the goals set out by the Greek government regarding organic waste management, by installing and running an expired food de-packaging facility. With this new investment, ELDIA will offer the full range of waste management services, implement the principles of the Circular Economy, and thus follow the EC requirements and Greek Regulations regarding the treatment of organic waste.

The project consists in investing in an organic waste processing facility, which will result in the processing of 15000 tonnes of organic waste per year, as well as increase the variety of sorted materials to be treated, thus increasing the company''s production capacity. The project will lead to the improvement of organic waste management in the targeted region, which lacks in licensed modern facilities to process large volumes of organic waste. This will be the first processing facility of organic waste in Greece. The equipment will be housed in a new building, in the promoter''s facilities. The expected project results will be manifold, and include an increase of promoter''s competitiveness, profitability and sustainability, in addition to the reduction of CO2 emissions and of the amount of organic waste disposed to the landfills. The project will also increase awareness among the population, and new jobs will also be created.

Additionally, ELDIA will develop a sustainability report, which will identify the gaps in its sustainability strategy, align its operation with the sustainability strategy. The results of the report will set the baseline of ELDIA’s future sustainability roadmap for accelerating its sustainability strategy and adjust to the net zero economy.

Summary of project results

The project has led to the improvement of the organic waste management in the region, which lacks in licensed modern facilities to process large volumes of organic waste, thus contributing towards sustainability and environmental wellbeing. Furthermore, a sustainability report was prepared, which includes information on the promoter''s sustainability performance and recommendations towards incorporating the sustainability criteria into its operations with the aim of lessening its environmental footprint.

An organic waste facility was constructed, expanding the range of waste that the promoter processes. New innovative equipment was implemented, such as a Low Speed Crusher, a De-Packer and a Dehydration Screw Press, in order to achieve the highest efficiency in recovering the organic portion of the waste. Some land improvements were made to receive the new equipment.

As a direct result of the new facility, the promoter diversified and increased the volume of waste it processes. As a consequence, it expanded its customer portfolio and increased its profitability entering into a new market segment. In parallel, the project led to the decrease of waste being sent to landfill and to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Moreover, a report to build a sustainability strategy in line with CSR Directive was drawn, which will guide ELDIA to become one of the first companies in the Greek waste management sector that embeds the sustainability criteria and combines it with operating responsibility.
