Description

Democracy Action is a nationwide organisation campaigning in the areas of rule of law and democracy, human rights, climate and environmental protection and social justice. DA works for, among other things, the repair of the judiciary, education and schooling, defence of Poland''s membership of the EU, free media, Poland''s adoption of an ambitious climate policy, improvement of the humanitarian situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, and solidarity with Ukraine.
Action''s mission is to build alliances and enable and facilitate action for change by making its resources available to individual citizens and organisations. At least 1 million people have taken part in Action''s activities. The largest appeal involved opposition to the tightening of the anti-abortion law, with more than half a million signatures over several years. Opposition to the actions of min. Charnek''s actions was signed by almost 150,000 people. The largest protests in 200 cities were held in defence of free courts - up to a quarter of a million people participated.
Democracy Action provides campaigning tools on the Our Democracy platform, where hundreds of petitions have already been created and turned into campaigns - the largest reach was the ''Allow children with disabilities with individual teaching to learn in school'' campaign, signed by 100,000 people.
As part of the institutional grant, Democracy Action is planning, among other things, to establish a coalition of Polish and Ukrainian organisations working for Poland to move away from fossil fuels and stop importing energy resources from Russia, which will develop common climate demands and present them to the leaders of all groupings running in the 2023 elections. Democracy Action also plans to campaign for a transition away from fossil fuels (including an end to the import of energy resources from Russia) linking climate to peace and translating its key messages and appeals into Ukrainian and Russian or Belarusian.

Summary of project results

Action Democracy is a nationwide organisation campaigning in the areas of rule of law and democracy, human rights, climate and environmental protection and social justice. AD works for, among other things, the repair of the judiciary, education and schooling, defence of Poland''s membership of the EU, free media, Poland''s adoption of an ambitious climate policy, improvement of the humanitarian situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, and solidarity with Ukraine.
Action''s mission is to build alliances and enable and facilitate action for change by making its resources available to individual citizens and community organisations of various profiles. They are communities of cultural figures, environmental activists, small local associations as well as self-advocates for important causes. The campaign provides campaigning tools on the Our Democracy platform, where hundreds of petitions have already been created and turned into campaigns - the largest reach was the ‘Allow children with disabilities with individual teaching to learn at school’ campaign, signed by 100,000 people. In the last year, there have been campaigns for, among others, the inclusion of children with ADHD in the support system, for the introduction of legislation that will prevent the death of elk in torture (8,500 signatures), and a petition in defence of the Forest Ambulance, threatened by the construction of the Central Transport Port in Michałów (19,000 signatures).

As part of an organisational grant, Democracy Action coordinated the formation of a coalition of Polish and Ukrainian organisations working for Poland to move away from fossil fuels and stop importing energy resources from Russia, which developed joint climate postulates and presented them to the leaders of all groupings running in the 2023 parliamentary elections. Democracy Action also conducted 16 trainings on pro-frequency campaigning for activists from local groups (including door-to-door activities, talking to voters, video production, communication or organising debates). Approximately 800 people participated in the work of the Action''s local headquarters, which conducted pro-frequency activities in dozens of cities across Poland. During approximately 250 local and nationwide events (including debates, festivals, fairs, conferences and demonstrations), people equipped with posters, leaflets, stickers and other materials convinced Polish women and men to participate in the vote. Activists also supported the activities of other organisations by engaging, among others, in the Civic Control of Elections implemented by the Committee for the Defence of Democracy.

The most important result of the organisational grant was the development of local Action Democracy groups, which, after the success of the campaign related to the parliamentary elections, decided to become involved in two more pro-frequency campaigns: on local government and the European aleactions, as well as other Action Democracy campaigns (e.g. for a ban on the sale of firecrackers and fireworks, restriction of hunting or support for the collection of signatures for the Law on Protection of Animals and the European project My Voice My Choice. Democracy Action led Polish and Ukrainian social organisations operating in Poland to speak with one voice on the issue of moving away from fossil fuels, and in the coalition agreement of the new government, the groupings forming it declared their cooperation on combating climate change and its impact on the lives of the people of Poland and their support for the green transition (including the move away from fossil fuels advocated by Democracy Action).
