Description
Project Objective: Prototyping of Online Design Studio and Product Customisation Terminal for Interior, Decor and Self-adhesive Product On-demand Printing. As a result of the project a prototype of a new technology “Online Design Studio and Product
Customisation Terminal” will be developed and the experience and good practice in between Latvia and Norway will be spread. The project objective is to develop a new product prototype – An online design studio and product customisation terminal for interior, decor and self-adhesive product on-demand printing (up to TRL7, inclusive). Compared to traditional ways of producing and distributing these design products, the new product will facilitate conventional logistics processes – bulk production and storage of industrial print products, thus reducing costs and leaving a positive impact on the environment (localized production and deliveries, personalized printing with reduced redundancies).
Summary of project results
This project aimed to address the challenges of traditional interior and decor product printing, which relies on mass production and extensive storage, leading to high costs, logistical complexities, and environmental waste. Current customization solutions are limited, mainly offering basic personalization for a narrow range of items (like T-shirts or phone cases). The demand for versatile, on-demand, and eco-friendly printing options for interior and decor products inspired the creation of an innovative, user-friendly solution.
To overcome these challenges, we developed the Online Design Studio and Product Customisation Terminal. Key activities included refining technical specifications, securing a contractor, and designing the product using an Agile approach. We created a prototype with automated personalized design capabilities, allowing users to add images, patterns, and symbols with ease. Users can place orders online or in-store, enabling the nearest printing company to produce items on demand, such as self-adhesive stickers, wallpaper, and canvas prints. A comprehensive communication plan shared updates and achievements with stakeholders in Latvia and Norway. These activities ensured a fast, efficient, customizable solution while minimizing waste.
The project delivered a ready-to-launch prototype for personalized on-demand printing, reducing logistics costs, environmental impact, and the need for mass storage. Customers gained an accessible tool to bring decor ideas to life without needing advanced design skills. By making personalized, eco-friendly decor items accessible to the public, it meets growing demands for sustainable and digital design solutions. The long-term impact includes setting a new standard for on-demand interior and decor products and encouraging a shift towards localized and sustainable production methods in the industry.
