Description

The project reacts to the need for children with ADHD syndrome to strengthen their position in their own family and to increase their competences to decide for themselves. ADHD is also known as hyperkinetic disorder, which means that it is an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder belonging to neurobiological disorders. The project aims to create conditions to increase the participation of children with ADHD syndrome in decision-making processes that directly affect them and/or have significant impacts on their development. At the same time, the applicant wishes to change the general image of children with ADHD in society and educate professionals involved in decision-making processes related to children with ADHD. The project will address these challenges by offering trainee ships, organising a case conference for children with ADHD syndrome, and developing a methodology, its evaluation and accreditation. The project focuses on two target groups: primarily children with ADHD, but also experts engaged in decision-making processes. The additional activities (approved in June 2016) are based on the assessment of the original project in terms of its effectiveness, sustainability and the demand of the target groups. They deepen benefit for children with ADHD. There will be implemented these activities: (1) Case conference, (2) Field work in the family, (3) Course “Methods of strengthening the rights of children with ADHD”, (4) Management, (5) Moderated discussion on the topic of children rights.

Summary of project results

The project reacted to needs of children with ADHD connected with their insufficient involvement in decision-making processes. It aimed to strengthen the position of children of ADHD in their own families, increase their competences to decide about themselves and enhance possibility to influence processes that directly concern them. The total number of 27 children was involved in the project and 45 experts were trained in finding out needs and wishes of children with ADHD. The employees of Centre for Family and Social Care did an internship in the organization Ratolest that has had long experience with such form of work. They learnt about alternative forms of case conferences that were then used to adjust classical conferences to the needs of hyperactive and restless children. ADHD children were supported via case conferences, field work in families and moderated discussions about their rights. 9 children with ADHD took part in the conferences, 18 were cared about via field work, some of them involved in both activities. A methodology was written based on experience with realizing tailor-made case conferences for ADHD children. Based on the field work, Methodology of Strengthening Rights of Children with ADHD was prepared, together with a course of the same name, accredited by Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The most common environment where the children needed support was school - creating individual educational programmes, plans of pedagogical support, taking part in school trips etc. The project was successful in improving children´s competences for effective participation in decision-making processes and managing their own motoric restlessness. It succeeded in training experts on work with children, who mostly appreciated the project´s practical benefit.
