Description

The city of Kohtla-Järve was formed due to the extraction of oil shale in an empty place. Today, the environmental condition of the city of Kohtla-Järve is significantly determined by the city''s business, which is largely oriented towards large-scale industry, incl. chemical industry. The activities of the project are primarily necessary to create a healthy, green and richer environment in the city of Kohtla-Järve.

The first major goal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A total of 9 kindergartens and a city government building will have solar panels installed on the roofs -  ''a 10 * 18kW solar panel park will be created, which will significantly reduce electricity consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.

The second goal of the project is to build community gardens on the territory of 14 kindergartens in Kohtla-Järve so that children can try gardening and be closer to nature from an early age.

The third and very big goal is the turnaround of the Ahtme district. The aim is to plant a tree hedge in the urban space to/instead of the old fences of schools and kindergartens. This allows (as it grows bigger) to demolish old depreciated fences, makes urban space significantly greener, and makes school and kindergarten space more beautiful and healthier.

The fourth part of the project is to increase the biodiversity of the Ahtme district by planting at least 300 trees in the urban space in the Ahtme district. The activities improve the air and urban image of the urban space, improve the quality of life and health of people, reduce the number of air pollution and CO2 emissions in the Ahtme district.

Beneficiaries: Children and staff visiting municipal sites (at least 1,500 people in total); Residents of Kohtla-Järve and Ahtme district. Also residents from Jõhvi municipality (Ahtme district is surrounded by Jõhvi Rural Municipality).

Summary of project results

The aim was to reduce CO2 emissions. As most of Kohtla-Järve municipality buildings are not renovated and they are energy-efficient, their CO2 footprint is relatively high.

The second aim was to bring habitants closer to nature through community gardening starting from kindergarten. The third aim was to make a green transition in Kohtla-Järve city. To make areas more green with trees and bushes. And the fourth was to increase biodiversity with various plants.

9 kindergartens and a city government building have solar panels installed on the roofs (all together 180 kW). On the territory of 14 kindergartens in Kohtla-Järve there are community gardens built. A tree hedge was planted in the urban space instead of old fences of schools and kindergartens of the Ahtme district. About 300 trees were planted in the urban space in the Ahtme district.

The annual CO2 level that will be saved is 37,71 t CO2 eqv/year. There are green urban areas in Ahtme district. And 14 kindergartens can enjoy their community garden and be closer to nature. Different plants that were planted in Kohtla-Järve have a significant effect on biodiversity. Inhabitants of Kohtla-Järve have greener roundings.
