The project answers to the problem of retraumatizing and revictimizing of the abused child (sexually or other types of abuse). According to ANDPDCA in the first 9 months of 2020 there were more than 10.600 child abuse, neglect and exploitation cases. The situation is overly concerning since abused child retraumatizing takes place because of the lack of a multidisciplinary approach in services provided and a proper space for evaluating and hearing the children. The project aims to facilitate the improvement of the awareness of 7000 people concerning children’s rights and also to implement the Icelandic Barnahus intervention model in this field This model will be piloted in a centre that will be opened in Bucharest and that will serve at least 100 children. Will be organized roundtables with local authorities for good practices sharing in Bucharest, Iasi and Timisoara, 25 education sessions for students for strengthening the perspective of human rights, equal treatment and combating all forms of abuse, will be created a platform to promote children`s rights and reporting of situations of violation of children''s rights and will be operationalized and equip a Barnahus pilot-centre that will provide multidisciplinary services for abused children within the new centre. In order to strengthen the organizational capacity of Promoter in replicating these method.10 employees will be trained in the implementation of the Barnahus method by international specialists.
The platform and the Barnahus pilot-center will be available on a period of at least 5 years after the completion of the project by S experts. Save the Children Romania’ main purpose is the protection and promotion of child rights and assurance regarding child protection, in compliance with UN Convention and the Partener is a public institution that ensures the compliance with child rights through counselling services, proposes and applies special protection measures for children in difficult situations.
Summary of project results
The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of Save the Children Organization to facilitate the coherent implementation in Romania of the innovative Barnahus model of institutional cooperation and multidisciplinary approach to protect the rights of children victims of sexual abuse and violence.
Thus, 3 workshops were organized in Bucharest, Iasi and Timisoara with 119 participants. 25 online legal and civic training sessions were organized and delivered to 592 students from Bucharest, Iași and Timișoara, who improved their perspective on human rights, equal treatment and combating all forms of abuse. A platform www.stopabuz.ro was created with 2 pages, one in Romanian and one in English, both containing materials addressed to children, parents and specialists who come into contact with child victims of abuse and violence. The Barnahus pilot center became operational, providing multidisciplinary services for 50 children aged 2-17 years. A Research Report on the interaction of child victims of sexual abuse with state institutions involved in the management of such cases was prepared and launched. The research involved interviewing 50 people. A guide including measures to improve policies for the protection of children against all forms of violence was developed.
In order to improve the organization of multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration in the Barnahus model for the benefit of the child and his/her best interests, 10 staff members were trained in the Barnahus intervention method. 50 children, victims of sexual abuse and violence were beneficiaries of multidisciplinary services in the Barnahus Pilot Center. Also, exploratory qualitative research was carried out, which aimed both to identify the practices, perceptions and attitudes of specialists in the field and to identify possible solutions for improving the response and protection services for child victims of sexual abuse. The reach of the published materials is 78,800. 3 workshops were held with local and central authorities for the prevention of re-traumatization of children, victims of violence and sexual abuse through the Barnahus model, and 592 children benefited from 25 legal and civic education and training sessions for schoolchildren to strengthen the perspective of human rights, equal treatment and combating all forms of abuse.
