The aim of the project is to build a lasting international partnership and a network of Polish-Norwegian cooperation. Through three-dimensional digitization of selected collections of monuments representing Polish and Norwegian cultural heritage and the development of guidelines and standards for the use of digital tools, the project will create an international data exchange archive.

Summary of project results

The main theme of the project: "Heritage Accessible. Professionalization of cultural workers and dissemination of cultural heritage – the interdisciplinary partnership of the National Museum in Lublin and the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo" is cooperation on the level of interdisciplinary management of cultural heritage, especially the exchange of knowledge on 3D documentation of material culture monuments and the use of this documentation for the protection, conservation and promotion of cultural heritage in order to make it available to the public.

Aim

The aim of the project is to build a lasting international partnership and a network of Polish-Norwegian cooperation. Through three dimensional digitization of selected collections of artefacts representing Polish and Norwegian cultural heritage and the development of guidelines and standards for the use of digital tools, the project will create an international data exchange archive. On the Polish side, these activities will focus on providing equal access to the cultural heritage of the Eastern Territories, which is part of the mission of the Museum of the Eastern Territories of the Former Republic of Poland – a new branch of the National Museum in Lublin.

1. Preparatory activities - developing a collection of artefacts from the collections of the National Museum in Lublin (NML) and the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo (MCH) representing the cultural heritage of Norway and Poland, and preparation of issues for workshops and debates.

2. Study visit of the representatives of the National Museum in Lublin to prepare the participation of the Polish side in the experts''

workshop in Norway on the digitization and conservation of collections.

3. Opening of the project. Announcement of the most important events that were implemented under the project.

4. Study visit of MCH representatives to prepare the participation of the Norwegian side in experts'' workshops in Poland relating to experiences in the conservation of collections and museum education.

5. Expert workshops - three-month training of an NML employee at the 3D Digitization Laboratory at the MCH, and 3D digitization of the collection of Norwegian artefacts. The core of this collection were artefacts from the Stone Age - illustrating the oldest cultural history of the Scandinavian Peninsula.

6. Workshops of experts - two-month residence of two Polish conservation specialists in the laboratory: SciCult Lab in Oslo. Exchange of experience in the field of artefacts conservation, especially from organic materials (wood, fabric).

7. Debate of experts and amateurs (online) - on the strategy of protection, digitization and popularization of artefacts and archaeological sites in Poland, Norway and some Eastern European countries with the participation of museum workers, conservators, amateurs-seekers, collectors - exchange of experiences. An exchange of views on the effectiveness of heritage protection policy in Poland and Norway.

8. Workshops and social research - on the expectations of the public towards the new Museum of the Eastern Territories of the Former Republic of Poland (local community, recipients from Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus, ethnic and national minorities, religious).

9. Outdoor event: historical reconstruction "The Battle on the Bug 1018", the outdoor event was innovatively supplemented with 3D scanning presentations and the use of 3D visualization of historical figures (eg medieval warriors).

10. Event in the region: "Festival of Borderlands" in Lubaczów in co-organization with local authorities and the public - presentation of material and spiritual heritage of eastern territories, including the effects of 3D scanning, presentation of the oral history media library

11. Online youth debate - why do we need cultural heritage and how to talk about it. Skills acquired through debating constitute an invaluable complement to traditional education.

12. Workshops of experts - a two-week residence of the team of museum educators from the NML in Oslo - an opportunity to exchange experiences on working with various groups of recipients, especially with the audience coming from national and religious minorities.

13. Workshops of experts - a one-week residence of a team of museum educators from the MCH in Lublin. In Poland, the exchange of knowledge focused on the experiences in the field of working with a local community with difficult access to culture, with people with physical or intellectual disabilities.

14. Festival - "Weekend with archeology" - a cultural and educational event popularizing history. Old crafts workshops, demonstrations, historical performance, simultaneous presentation (in museums in Oslo and Lublin) of scanning and 3D printing "Together we discover the Viking Age."

15. Workshops of experts - two-month residence of two Norwegian conservation specialists from the MCH laboratory at the National Museum in Lublin. Expert exchange of experiences was carried out in the field of easel and wall painting conservation.

16. International scientific conference in the series: “Cultural heritage of the eastern territories of the former Republic of Poland”, the theme of which was the use of digital technologies in recognizing cultural heritage, its protection and management and also the use of digital technologies in recognizing cultural heritage, its protection and management and dissemination.

17. Creativity workshops - in the field of creative use of 3D documentation of material culture monuments: in tourism, entertainment industry, conservation. Visit of a group of representatives of the cultural sector from the Lublin region (with the participation of the

local tourist organization Gotania) to Oslo.

18. Creativity workshops - in the field of creative use of 3D documentation of material culture monuments: in tourism, entertainmentindustry, conservation. Visit of a group of representatives of the cultural sector from Norway to the Hrubieszów region.

19. 3D Digitizing of collection of artefacts from the National Museum in Lublin, including specimens of Scandinavian origin, from the collections of the museum in Lublin and regional museums from eastern Poland (Hrubieszów, Tomaszów Lubelski, Zamość).

20. Virtual exhibition of a collection of artefacts scanned in three dimensions from the collections of NML and the MCH presented on Polish and Norwegian portals, especially addressed to recipients with difficult access to culture or excluded due to disability. The exhibition was prepared jointly by museum experts from Lublin and Oslo.

21. Educational mobile exhibition of the selection of copies of artefacts prepared thanks to 3D scanning, addressed to recipients with difficult access to culture. 

22. Closing of the project (April 2024).

Closing of the project (April 2024) was crowned with a multimedia show of its digitally documented effects. Interdisciplinary documented - preserved cultural heritage, realized various cultural events, professionalization of the staff of the cultural sector, development of the audience, reaching recipients with difficult access to culture was a permanent result of all tasks carried out during the project. The symmetrical involvement of the applicant and the Norwegian partner guaranteed the stability and continuation of the partnership of both institutions.
