Summary of project results

The project has improved the position of Burmese refugees in the Czech society and helped eliminating language and cultural barriers during their integration process. Project activities helped Burmese refugees to become more independent, to establish and maintain contacts within the local communities and helped them to integrate into the Czech environment. The project raised awareness of local inhabitants from the municipalities where the refugees live, as well as of the Czech students from schools which refugee children are attending. The project has reduced the local communities' potential fear from foreigners and increased their mutual understanding. Total of 767,5 hours counselling and assistance was provided to 34 Burmese refugees and their families with an impact on the entire target group of 128 people. We have organized 4 educational workshops at schools and 6 events of "Burmese-Czech Days" in six cities and municipalities of the Czech Republic. Composed with the recipes of dishes prepared at our events, a recipe book titled "Tastes of Burma" was published in an edition of 200 pieces. Total of 4,000 pieces of information leaflet about the Burmese refugees were published and distributed. The project helped Burmese resettled refugees to overcome language and cultural barriers for their full integration into the Czech environment. Project activities helped families of refugees to break the social isolation and expand interpersonal relationships outside the Burmese community. Activities supported spreading the knowledge and raising awareness about the Burmese people and their situation in the Czech Republic, strengthened the multicultural environment and set better conditions for the integration of refugees. Czech communities gained direct personal experience with Burmese refugees that created positive and better relationships with the target group. Burmese refugees have improved their ability to get orientation within the Czech society.
