The project focuses on developing the Varna museum as a PLACE OF COMMUNICATION and a driver of social and cultural development of Varna and the region. This will be achieved by implementing the sub-objectives: modernising and expanding Varna museum’s exhibition spaces; developing the museum as a place of communication: a new space serving as crossroads of past and present, of different civilisations, and of modern society in all its cultural diversity; turning the museum into an attractive cultural and historical center for new audiences by introducing new technologies and innovations; enhancing the managerial and expert capacity of Varna museum''s staff. The project will deliver improved and increased management and expert capacity of the museum staff; newly attracted audiences; improved and revitalised environment at the Varna museum; exchange of experience and good practices in cultural and historical heritage management in Norway; development and implementation of the Norwegian museum management model at the Varna Regional Museum of History; prepared entrepreneurial plan for the development of the museum. Project partners: University of Economics –Varna (Bulgaria) and the Nordland Museum (Norway).
Summary of project results
The overall goal of the project is to modernize and expand the exhibition spaces in the Regional History Museum Varna in order to ensure broad public accessibility to the cultural and historical values in the museum, to develop the museum as a place for communication: a new space - an intersection of past and present, of different civilizations and of modern society in its cultural diversity, as well as to transform the museum into an attractive cultural and historical center through the implementation of new technologies.
The main results of the project include the modernization of the exhibition spaces in the building of the "Archaeology" department of the museum. By carrying out renovation works and supplying new equipment and furniture, new life was breathed into important exhibition spaces - the corridors in front of the halls of the permanent exhibition, the "Odessos" hall; the stone monument depository, the "North" hall, the hall of the new permanent exhibition "Numismatics", several halls of permanent exhibitions, the entrance to the museum, as well as a separate cloakroom for visitors. Air conditioning equipment was installed in the "Odessos" halls, the "North" hall and the main lobby, as well as moisture absorbers, shelving equipment for the Stone Monument Depository were purchased. A new "Numismatics" exhibition was created with coins used in Odessos, Varna and the region during Antiquity, the Middle Ages and modern times, which was enriched with appropriate maps, boards and signs to illustrate the relevant eras.
The project achieved renovation and revitalization of spaces by carrying out repair activities and supplying new equipment and furniture, as well as upgrading the management and expert capacity of the staff for the purpose of effective and entrepreneurial management of the exhibited cultural and historical heritage.
Summary of bilateral results
The experience of the Norwegian partner was particularly valuable and helped significantly in improving the capacity of the museum team, as well as in acquiring new experience and becoming familiar with various good practices for presenting cultural values through permanent and temporary exhibitions.
