Description

Programme outcome the project contributes to: Outcome l: "Cultural heritage management enhanced"

The project aims to increase knowledge and awareness of Roma cultural heritage, human rights and the rights of minorities.

The project shall include, inter alia, the following activities:

  • The restoration and revitalisation of the Roma holocaust site in Lety as a centre for memorial, education and awmeness-raising;
  • The construction of a visitor/ information centre for the memorial;
  • Educational activities for the Roma community, the general population and schools.

Summary of project results

The project addressed the inadequate state of cultural heritage site Lety and introduced a new concept for dignified commemoration of Roma Holocaust victims while making the revitalized memorial accessible to the public. It serves as a reminder of a tragic past and a tool for education, prevention, and social development. The greatest challenge was meeting deadlines while ensuring multi-source financing. Conversely, communication with all partners, especially the Norwegian partner Falstad Centre, went smoothly.

The project included building a visitor center with equipment, creating the entire interior exhibition, and a conceptually integrated mobile app for visitors. Educational programs for the public and schools were developed, and cultural activities were held. A business strategy and promotional elements were created to ensure the memorial’s sustainability.

In addition to the restoration of the cultural heritage site, we emphasized public access, including barrier-free pathways and facilities. Educational and cultural activities helped raise awareness of the “unknown Holocaust” and promoted education against totalitarianism, fostering democratic thinking and increasing the memorial’s visibility.

The memorial inspires greater civic engagement and support for human rights initiatives. Positive impacts were strengthened through partnerships with the Norwegian partner Falstad Centre, the municipality of Lety, and the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň.

The project’s goal has been achieved. A memorial to the victims of the Roma Holocaust in Lety near Písek and a visitor center have been built and are operational. A business strategy has been implemented, and a web app for presenting cultural heritage has been launched. Four cultural events were organized, and a program of educational activities to raise awareness of minority cultural heritage, including Roma, was created and executed.

The project to build a new Roma Holocaust memorial in Lety connects the existing cultural monument with the site of the former camp and provides a dignified tribute to the victims. It includes the revitalization of the memorial, the construction of a visitor center, educational programs and a web application. The expected impact is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the memorial, spread awareness of the Roma Holocaust and strengthen democratic values.

Summary of bilateral results

Throughout the duration of the project, there were short consultations on the emerging exhibitions, advice on building a visitor centre, consultations on educational activities and concepts.A study visit of three Museum of Romani Culture staff members to Falstad Museum in Norway was also important. The purpose of the trip was to share professional experience and good practice within the PDP Lety project. Workshops organised by the partner organisation were also held, in which, among other things, experience with artefacts and archaeology, experience with the mobile app, and experience with the topics of: communication with memorials and the public were shared. The results of the cooperation were worksheets and educational programmes.The active participation of all partners contributed to the successful implementation of the international conference. A concrete plan for future cooperation is still in the making.
