Description

At present, the teaching of global issues in schools is not comprehensive, limited mainly to individual subjects, lacking cross-curricular integration and inter-subject links.
The project supports teachers to establish collaboration between themselves (between subjects) by teaching the same global issues, for example in science and chemistry.
In order to strengthen cross-curricular links and cross-curricular learning, a publication will be produced containing lesson-by-lesson methodological materials for integrating the same global issues into multiple teaching subjects. The publication will thus enable teachers of different subjects to incorporate the same global theme within the same grade at similar times. This will allow pupils in multiple subjects to gain a deeper understanding of one global issue.
The activities of the project will improve and streamline the teaching process at the 2nd level of primary school; pupils and teachers will deepen their knowledge of global topics, acquire the skills needed to discover the complex interconnectedness of the world and become better oriented in it.

Summary of project results

Currently, the teaching of global topics in schools is mainly limited to individual subjects, their connection across the curriculum is lacking, cross-subject links are not created, and thus the potential of global topics is not fully utilized in terms of knowledge, but also skills and attitudes. The goal of the "Global topics across subjects" project was to create a methodical publication, thus supporting the teaching of global topics across the curriculum. In order to gain knowledge about the given issue and also better orient themselves in the current world. The resulting publication has the ambition to help teachers of various teaching subjects at the 2nd grade of primary school to cooperate and look for synergies in the teaching of global topics, thereby achieving the impact of teaching on pupils and at the same time making the work of teachers easier.

Activities of the project:
A1 – Strengthening the capacities of the organization''s employees - the organization''s employees were trained in teaching skills, leading reflections or reading literacy. We updated the organization''s strategic goals and activities to theirs, thought about the organization''s PR options and how to fulfill PR activities.
A2 – Creation of educational lessons – 17 educational lessons were created. Digital elements have also been created for some lessons.
A3 – Creation of the publication - the PUBLICATION "Global topics across subjects" was created. It contains seventeen teaching lessons that are devoted to four global themes
A4 - Methodical seminars - A total of 7 seminars for teachers took place, of which 2 were online, 2 face-to-face and 3 entrances at universities for future teachers. A total of 122 teachers participated in the seminars (no duplicates).
A5 – Section on the website - A page containing digital elements for teaching was created on the ARPOK website. 14 digital elements were created.
Outputs:

In cooperation with teachers of the second grade of elementary schools, ARPOKE and representatives of other educational organizations, the PUBLICATION "Global topics across subjects" was created. It contains seventeen teaching lessons that are devoted to four global themes (migration, climate change, interconnectedness of the world and gender) across subjects. The publication including appendices can be downloaded here: https://eshop.arpok.cz/eshop/globalni-temata-napric-predmety/
122 participants tried out specific lessons and activities from the publication "Global Themes Across Subjects".

A total of 55 actors/participants benefited from the presentation of project outputs and the sharing of good practice, of which 12 were involved in the project (creators of lessons, piloting, participation in seminars).

The project had a positive impact on teachers who would like to incorporate global themes into different subjects. According to feedback, they like the publication and the digital elements very much and they consider them useful in their practice. The participants of the seminars benefited the most, but also the creators of the lessons, because they could participate in the creation themselves and thus try everything, what is related to the creation of such materials.
Reaction from the RVP blog: "Thanks for the link and the inspiring textbook. I will critically analyze it with students (future teachers of geography) and use it in teaching, for example as an illustrative aid that they can use creatively. We will talk more about migration or gender as cultural phenomena than just social ones, but that is just an extension of what is in this textbook. Thank you also for making it freely accessible to those interested. I also appreciate the inclusion of sources for individual topics, which is not usual for textbooks in the Czech Republic."
