Description
Zikmund''s villa in Zlín? That is a house built in 1935 for the first governor of the Zlín district, later on, the property of movie director (Oscar winner) Elmar Klos and then for almost 70 years home of the traveler Miroslav Zikmund. The house was adapted in 1953 under the direction of architect Zdeněk Plesník and designer Miroslav Navrátil. The house can be seen in the same shape today, including the complete design furniture from the 1950s and the collection of objects from the expeditions of the traveller.
Since December 2020, this cultural monument (including a large garden) is in the care of the Endowment fund. The mission is to make this space accessible to the public and to raise awareness of the above-mentioned personalities. The Fund prepared the project following the wishes of Miroslav Zikmund, that the house should serve the professional and general public for a long time and support values such as curiosity, dialogue, creativity and education.
The Fund will
- do the necessary inventory,
- create photo documentation of valuable items,
- create a technical background, which we will then use to organize ir/regular events (discussions, exhibitions, meetings, guided tours). The Fund will also take part in important local events.
The project will share inspiration and know-how with the project''s partner, the Norwegian Kon-Tiki Museum. The project will also focus on publicity. And because of the unstable situation related to COVID-19, the Fund will acquire streaming services and produce a virtual tour.
Summary of project results
The project was essential for making Zikmund''s Villa accessible to the public and preserving its cultural heritage. The challenges included organizing tours, discussions, participation in cultural events, and ensuring publicity. Thanks to the project, a partnership with the Kon-Tiki Museum was established, leading to the development of a sustainability strategy and experience sharing. High quality was ensured for all activities, and the deadlines set by project promoter were successfully met.
Thanks to the project, key activities were implemented to make Zikmund''s Villa accessible to the public and preserve its cultural heritage. An inventory of collection items and books was completed, photo documentation made, and an electronic catalog created. Visitors can now use an interactive virtual tour. A total of 271 tours and 26 discussions were organized, including events during the Zlín Film Festival and Zlín Design Week. New websites were launched to enhance project publicity. Collaboration with the Kon-Tiki Museum in Norway facilitated knowledge sharing and led to the creation of a sustainability strategy for the villa''s long-term care. The project management participated in educational activities, improving their skills in managing cultural heritage. Exhibitions like "The Story of Zikmund''s Villa" took place during Architecture Days, and the villa was integrated into major cultural events, raising awareness of the project and its impact.
The outputs of the project included inventory, creation of an el.catalog and an interactive VT, the organization of 271 tours and 26 discussions. The project led to the development of new websites and a strategy. An unintended effect was the higher demand for tours, which exceeded the planned goals. The project provided visitors with better access to cultural heritage and increased awareness of the villa and its historical significance. While 76 tours were planned, 271 were actually held.
The project significantly contributed to the overall goal of the program, which is to strengthen the management and accessibility of cultural heritage in a short time frame. The long-term impact lies in increasing interest in this heritage, promoting tourism, and enhancing international cooperation, especially through the partnership with Kon-Tiki.
Summary of bilateral results
The main results of the bilateral cooperation with the Norwegian Kon-Tiki Museum included the sharing of professional know-how and practical experience in the field of cultural heritage management, especially in the context of presenting the legacy of famous travellers. The partnership has led to an improvement in the knowledge of sourcing funding and the long-term sustainability of projects. The cooperation has also enabled the realisation of exhibitions, talks and other cultural events that have raised international awareness of Zikmund''s Villa. This benefit had a wider impact as it enhanced our ability to work with international partners. The partnership with Kon-Tiki Museum has strengthened the ability to develop long-term strategies and improved understanding of international cooperation, which will have a positive impact on future projects and the development of the Villa. Further future plans - a visit to Norway in autumn 2024 by representatives of the project promoter and Kon-tiki Museum in the Czech Republic, a joint workshop on innovative approaches in the museum sector.
