Description
Biosolids S.A. is active in the area of organic waste recycling, using a composting procedure to produce soil nutrients and bio-fertilisers.
iCompost is an investment project which consists in investing in an innovative aeration composting technology, which will lead to the increase of the productivity of the organic waste composting unit and to the decrease of production costs per product unit, and thus improve the quality of the end product (the organic fertilisers), as well as increase the company’s competitiveness and its environmental footprint.
The project consists in the procurement of the new equipment for the installation of the aeration composting system, as well as the expansion of the production plant. In addition, new containers will be purchased, to be used as mobile composting units for collecting waste from third party companies and municipalities.
In order to enhance further its competitiveness, Biosolids will train its employees in the areas of Business strategic development & Green business modeling, Life Cycle Analysis, Waste management, and Green Innovation. Moreover, Biosolids will participate in 2 sectoral exhibitions which will enhance the company''s visibility in the market, as well as conduct a feasibility study which will examine the possibility to develop a sustainable biogas unit.
Summary of project results
The aim of this project was to trigger increased competitiveness of the company by the application of advanced equipment, the use of state-of-the-art innovative technologies and the development of innovative business models and processes.
The goal of the promoter, which uses composting procedures to produce products like soil nutrients and fertilisers, was to apply new technology and composting solutions in order to increase the products'' quality and meet the needs of organic farming.
The project consisted in investing in an aeration composting technology to increase the productivity of the organic waste composting unit and lower the costs, resulting in increased competitiveness of the company. The new equipment, which was purchased (aeration composting system, compost turner, containers, fleece roller system, and handling equipment), was integrated into the promoter’s production processes. Both technical (civil and electromechanical) as well as building works were carried out in the production facility to accommodate the new equipment. In addition, the promoter trained its personnel in the areas of Business Strategic Development, Waste Management and Green Innovation as well as conducted a feasibility study on the potential advantages of biogas production, to enhance further its future competitiveness.
The investment in the new aeration technology, which is the promoter''s main production activity, allowed Biosolids to compost with faster rates, to produce a safer product in terms of specifications, but also a higher quality product. It’s the first investment of this type in Greece, especially with regard to open composting aeration technology.
So the project allowed the promoter to scale up its activities; it has increased its competitiveness, efficiency, and reliability.
