Description

The project aims to develop an integrated and innovative system of quality services to ensure increased inclusion and empowerment of Roma people in Roma communities identified in Bucharest. Sector 1.

The project activities include:

- Increasing access to sectoral and integrated services for 600 people in vulnerable situations, of which at least 400 (2/3) Roma;

- Providing educational services for 200 children to stimulate school participation and prevent school dropout: mediation, counseling and school and vocational guidance activities;

- Providing legal assistance in order to obtain identity documents for a number of 8 people

- Employment services - Vocational counseling, work mediation and qualification course for 300 beneficiaries;

- Empowering 30 Roma people, with a focus on young Roma women through 2 information and training campaigns for leaders;

- Community facilitation in order to develop a local strategy for social inclusion of Romanian citizens of Roma ethnicity, inhabitants of sector 1;

- Training of specialists and volunteers involved in working with Roma people.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to address the systemic socio-economic exclusion faced by vulnerable Roma communities and the need to reduce prejudices and stereotypes about Roma by carrying out campaigns to raise awareness/ sensitize the majority and change the discourse about Roma from the marginalized areas of Bucharest''s Sector 1, including Giulești Sârbi, Chitila/Chitila Triaj, and Străulești

By addressing these challenges through an integrative approach and a series of social, medical, educational and employment support services, the project aimed to enhance the inclusion of marginalized communities, improved the quality of life for communities living in vulnerable situations and empowered the roma community.

The project aimed to provide integrated sectoral quality services for 600 vulnerable individuals, of which 400 are of Roma ethnicity, from marginalized communities in Sector 1.

To achieve the project''s objectives, the following activities were implemented:

  • 200 individuals received comprehensive services, including social counseling for children, family counseling to encourage continued education and prevent school dropout, psychological counseling, vocational counseling, health counseling, and material support such as food packages, clothing, footwear, and school supplies;
  • 8 vulnerable individuals obtain identity documents;
  • occupational and vocational counselors identified adults seeking employment without certified qualifications. Training courses were provided in fields like eyelash technician, tailoring, nursing, data entry, auto mechanics, hairstyling, and manicuring, resulting in 10 individuals earning certified diplomas;
  • an early intervention mechanism to address school dropout risks was developed in collaboration with schools in Sector 1 and DGASPC Sector 1;
  • 11 specialists and volunteers were trained in communication, assertiveness, empathy, conflict management, equal opportunities, and non-discrimination. Three participants completed a "Train the Trainer" program to extend training to colleagues;
  • two awareness campaigns targeted Roma individuals, focusing on education and parenting, particularly engaging women and youth from Chitila, Străulești, and Giulești;
  • 36 monthly meetings with women, emphasizing group cohesion and the importance of women''s voices in community development;
  • four public cafés engaged over 100 participants, using interactive methods like debates and role-playing to address topics such as education, parenting, and women’s rights;
  • distributed 600 food packages, 600 hygiene kits, 193 clothing and footwear packages for children, and an additional 592 hygiene kits for children;
  • 1,000 posters, 5 roll-ups, 5 press releases, and 20 posters were created and displayed in prominent locations.

These activities fostered inclusion, improved access to services, and empowered vulnerable communities in Sector 1.

The project increased the social inclusion and the empowerment of the Roma population in the marginalized areas of Bucharest''s Sector 1 of Giulești Sârbi, Chitila/Chitila Triaj, and Străulești by increasing the access and quality of sectoral or integrated services in sectors such as social assistance, education, employment, health, the ability of the Roma (Empowerment), especially of Roma women and young women, of experts and young Roma.
