Description

The project responds to low literacy rate among the Roma community in the Czech Republic, where 70% have only primary education. The project's aim is to increase the number of Roma who successfully complete high school. Activities are based on individual support through mentoring, targeted motivational activities for primary school leavers and secondary school students, development workshops and coordinated cooperation with all key partners for successful completion of study (I. e. schools, parents and cooperating external mentors). Secondary schools will be supported in the processes of inclusive education. The project also reaches out to volunteers, their development and capacity source.

Summary of project results

The project was a reaction to the need of raising the formal education level of young Roma generation that is generally more endangered by early school leaving issues and school failure thanks to socioeconomic disadvantage. The main goal of the project was to raise the number of Roma students who finish their high school education sucessfully as they receive support to sustain motivation for their studies, to form strategies of adaptation at high school and remain in the education system as long as possible. The project delivered 35 motivation and adaptation lessons\workshops for students, initiated cooperation and communication with 27 primary and high schools. 35 students received infdividual support through the individual mentoring programme, 9 lessons called „Money! at schools to suport financial education of young students were delivered. We created and delivered workshops to support communication and presentation skills as well as a workshop for teachers to work with socially and economically disadvantaged children\pupils. We created two methodological brochures (mentoring programme and inclusive education) and we validated several fundraising strategies. All activities and outcomes strongly supported educational achievenents, participation and motivation of young Roma students who participated in project activities. We received money through fundraising and Christmas benefitions to support our target group and during the porject a community of active and motivated young Roma students has been formed that continues to take part in their own study and life achievments.
