Description

The aim of the project is restoration of four sites with degraded wetlands - peat bogs and peat bog ecosystems In addition, the wetland on the school premises in Štiavnické Bane will be reconstructed as 5th site of the project.

The primary purpose of revitalization measures is the restoration of processes indicating the natural development of the wetland system in the micro-basin and its inherent functions such as: free movement of water, accumulation and retention of water in forest ecosystems around peatlands, communication with groundwater, balancing of runoff conditions by infiltration and refilling of water in dry periods, water retention in the country to restore the small water cycle, slowing down of flows during torrential rains using accumulation in sedimentation polders and seepage pits, creation of refugees and breeding sites for amphibians and reptiles, supporting diversity and ecological stability in the territory, microclimate regulation, the ability of ecosystems to adapt to climate change and to mitigate adverse impacts, landscaping, aesthetic and recreational function, preventing the inflow of polluted water into natural ecosystems from existing export routes created in connection with mining activities, elimination of the negative impact of mining activities on the natural ecosystems in the area of interest, achievement of a favourable status of wetland habitats and species.

The project will focus on following target groups:

- General public who will be aware of the importance of wetlands in the fight against climate change,

- Young people who will have knowledge on wetlands and biodiversity and will gain practical experience with the implementation of measures,

- Academics who will be able to implement an improved curriculum for students in the field of science and ecology.
