Description
The overall goal of the project is to increase the energy security supply of energy for the home of elderly in Alba Iulia Municipality and to decrease the CO2 emissions by using energy produced from geothermal resources. The project includes installing geothermal pumps to replace the thermal distribution system and monitoring the performance obtained through an intelligent Building Energy Management System (BEMS).
The proposed systems consist of three ground-water geothermal pumps of 130 kW thermal power each with reversible cycle, with the possibility to produce heat in winter or air conditioning in summer. The microgrid system proposed in the project will improve the thermal and electrical infrastructure, by developing an innovative technical solution based on microgrid approach that produces thermal energy from geothermal sources. Together with the existing electrical infrastructure, the system will ensure the energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability for the Alba Iulia nursing home. Zero tolerance to corruption and mismanagement will be applied throughout the entire project. The project also meets all the requirements of the internal legislation. The project also respects and promotes the non-discrimination and equal opportunities principles and will comply with the legislation on preventing and sanctioning all forms of discrimination.Estimated outcomes include an annual CO2 emission reduction of 148 tonnes of CO2 eq./year which is 47,93% reduction. Energy produced from geothermal sources goes from 0 to 1.1174 MWh/year by 2024.
The project is done in partnership with the Romanian company S.C. Societatea de Inginerie Sisteme S.A. which will develop the methodology. The main goals is to incorporate important attributes of the microgrid to be controllable, interconnectable, reconfigurable and integrated in the main grid.
Summary of project results
The overall goal of the project was to increase the energy security supply of energy for the home of elderly in Alba Iulia Municipality and to decrease the CO2 emission by using energy produced from geothermal sources.
The project installed geothermal pumps to replace the thermal distribution system and monitoring the performance obtained through an intelligent Building Energy Management System.
The proposed systems consist of three ground-water geothermal pumps of 130 kW thermal power each with reversible cycle, with the possibility to produce heat in winter or air conditioning in summer. The microgrid system proposed in the project improves the thermal and electrical infrastructure, by developing an innovative technical solution based on microgrid approach that produces thermal energy from geothermal sources. Together with the existing electrical infrastructure, the system will ensure the energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability for the Alba Iulia nursing home.
The geothermal system installed at Elderly Home in Alba Iulia during the project is the first in a local municipal building and one of the most important ones in terms of installed power in the region. For first 5 months, the promotor noted a major reduction of gas consumption, and a total consumption of 368,6 MWh instead of 989,4 MWh (-64%), and an estimation of a yearly consumption of 884 MWh instead of 1776 MWh.
