Status:
Completed
Final project cost:
€999,439
Donor Project Partners:
Verda Bygg AS(NO)

Description

The aim of the project is to increase the productivity and competitiveness of SIA KDW WERKE Baltics by launching a new product - wood/aluminium windows with thermal transmittance UW=0.50-0.60 W/m2K for passive houses, using resource-saving production technologies.

The project will be implemented in the areas of green innovation :

1) creation of environmentally friendly and energy efficient materials and products - the company will start producing a completely new product  - wooden/aluminium windows, which will provide increased thermal insulation to meet the requirements of passive houses;

2) use of surplus material from production processes: the new equipment will ensure that useful surplus material (wood) from production process will be preserved in a quality good for production of window trim  (wood mouldings), reducing the amount of wood waste by 11%;

3) any other improvements in products, technologies or processes related to green innovation that contribute to the modernisation and sustainability of production processes: purchase of highly automated, more energy-efficient (compared to the company''s existing technologies) equipment that will ensure higher productivity (both in terms of labour involvement and production time), lower electricity consumption per 1 window unit, thus making a significant contribution to modernising the company''s production technologies and increasing its competitiveness at international level.

Main project activities:

1. Purchase of equipment and software.

2. Knowledge transfer activities with a project partner of the donor country (Norway).

3. Measure related to the implementation of the new service - employee involvement in the project.

4. Information and communication activities.

Summary of project results

The main challenges the Project set out to address:

  • project applicant currently produces wood/aluminium windows with a thermal transmittance of 0.82 W/m2K;
  • the existing equipment is technologically obsolete, requires a large labour input to ensure the production of the product and has 31% higher energy consumption (per unit produced) compared to new technologies;
  • too much surplus raw material is generated - wasteful consumption of wood which is currently processed into pellets for heating (transported to the pellet plant);
  • 100% capacity of key equipment (planers and CNC machines) is already being used

Short summary of project

During the implementation of the project, the following activities were carried out:

  • Purchase of equipment and software:
  • Purchase of automatic throughfeed moulder;
  • Purchase of CNC machines for window production with automated part loading
  • Purchase of HSK63 tools for window production on two CNC machines
  • Purchase of production software
  • Knowledge transfer activities with a project partner of the donor country (Norway):
  • Thermal modeling of new wooden / aluminum window profile system
  • Testing the air or water leakage of new wooden / aluminum windows
  • Life cycle calculation of new wooden / aluminum windows based on test results
  • Measure related to the implementation of the new service - employee involvement in the project;
  • Information and communication activities

As a result of the implementation of the project, 1 new product - wood/aluminium windows with thermal transmittance UW=0.50-0.60 W/m2K for passive houses, using resource-saving production technologies. Thus, ensuring the increase of productivity and competitiveness of SIA “KDW Werke Baltics”.

Main results of Project:

  • 1 new product ; wood/aluminium windows with thermal transmittance UW=0.50-0.60 W/m2K for passive houses
  • 1complect of energy-efficient and sustainable equipment (includes: automatic throughfeed moulder;CNC machines for window production with automated part loading, HSK63 tools for window production on two CNC machines));
  • 9 employees are engaged in the Project (3 existing employees and 6 new positions), from which at least 3 are in category disadvantaged employees: “individual above the age of 50”.

It is planned that after the introduction of the new solution it will produce the following financial and environmental improvements (based on modelled indicator forecasts for the next year after Project implementation):

Financial indicators:

  • Turnover (increase of 2,24 times) 5 988 204 EUR
  • Productivity per 1 employee (increase of 142%) 166 339 EUR

Environmental indicators:

  • Reduction of CO2 emissions - 78,07tCo2/year;
  • Reduction of energy comsumption - 816,35MWh/year;

It is expected that the average export value in 3 years will amount to 90% of total demand in the identified target markets within European (Germany, Norway, Sweden) and North American (USA and Canada)

Summary of bilateral results

The project involved a partner from the Kingdom of Norway: Verda Bygg AS, a company representing the residential and non-residential construction sector. Its core business is both full-scale construction and window installation in new and renovated buildings. The partner has ensured knowledge transfer of the new product during the project implementation:1)thermal modelling of the wooden/aluminium window profile system;2)thermal insulation and air/water leakage testing;3)life cycle calculations of the new product based on test results, material supply chain data provided by SIA KDW Werke BalticsIn addition, the partner has provided advice, according to its competence, on the achievement of the expected quality characteristics of the new product in order to ensure compliance with the above standards.The project partner, working together with the applicant, gained new knowledge related to the quality and installation requirements of windows in passive houses. In the long term, both companies are planning to continue their cooperation by Verda Bygg AS, which is starting to offer the new wooden/aluminium windows of SIA KDW WERKE Baltics in their construction projects, thus expanding their range of windows.
