Description
The aim is to share information about the causes of climate change for young generation, to present desirable ways of behaving in which we can mitigate the negative factors causing climate change. To show how climate change will affect the environment, health and living conditions of people in the Czech Republic and regions. And last but not least, to acquaint them with the principles of adaptation measures. The key target groups are teachers and pupils of kindergartens and primary schools and high school students.
THE PROJECT USES EDUCATIONAL AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
9-part radio series with videos for children and youth about climate change (45 minutes)
Popular-educational publication for teachers, pupils and students. (3 000 prints + 2 000 e-copies)
Popular educational articles (6 national/8 regional)
Workshops for teachers, pupils and students about climate change (min. 550 people)
Addressing professionals and the public at a conference for a minimum of 150 people
Campaign on FB and websites Recyklohraní (min. 10,000 people addressed)
The strong point of the project is 3,700 schools actively involved in educational program Recyklohraní. Thanks to our experience, we will provide TG with balanced information in an understandable form taking into account the region where they live. The result will be the strengthening of critical thinking about climate change, and we believe in changing opinions of young generation.
The partner of the project is The Union of Towns and Municipalities of the Czech Republic – they will support cooperation with school founders, give us experts’ consultations and partnership for public conference.
Summary of project results
The main goal of our project, ‘Ekoabeceda pro klima’ (Eco Alphabet for Climate), is to engage the young generation with crucial information about climate change. We aim to explain why the climate is changing and offer practical ways to alter our behaviour to protect the environment. Additionally, we demonstrate how climate change impacts the environment, health, and daily life in Czechia.
Our project also highlights the importance of integrating these critical topics into school curriculums, which are currently lacking. By developing comprehensive methodologies, we have been helping teachers to involve these topics to theirs lesson plans. Our focus spans from nursery schools to primary and secondary schools, ensuring that students of all ages are informed and prepared to adapt to this pressing issue.
We created a series of videos for kids and teenagers focusing on climate change. In collaboration with Český rozhlas and Rádio Junior, we broadcasted a 9-part series. We also developed the textbook ‘Ekoabeceda pro klima’ for teachers and students, distributing 3,000 copies to those involved in the project. The methodology is available at www.recyklohrani.cz, where over 3,300 followers have registered so far.
Our topics have been widely covered in newspapers and magazines, including local publications. We organized three half-day workshops for teachers, where we introduced the materials and methodology to be used in schools. Teachers had the opportunity to try some activities and share their experiences. Additionally, we held numerous webinars to provide a platform for sharing and support.
During this project, we tested the methodology for lecturer programme ‘Klima a co já?’ (Climate and What About Me), aimed at 8th and 9th graders and first-year secondary school students. We also held meetings with town and city leaders to present the materials. Another highlight was a so-called long-term homework ‚Mokřady a tajemství ztracené vody’ (Moors and the Lost Water), which involved 327 schools. Based on our feedback, over 8,000 students participated, with many others joining regularly via Facebook.
We engaged over 3,800 schools across Czechia, fostering ongoing communication among all parties involved. We created and distributed more than 5,000 copies of the ‘Ecoabeceda pro klima’ publications in both printed and electronic formats. Additionally, we produced a ten-part video series to assist teachers.
Through seminars and webinars, we’ve trained more than 650 participants including teachers, town and city officials, and students. Thanks to ‘Ekoabeceda pro klima,’ climate change issues became accessible for teachers, providing them with practical and usable materials to integrate this critical topic into their education.
The methodological materials and accompanying videos have become essential tools for educators, helping them meet year-round educational goals and address climate change across various subjects. School representatives also had the opportunity to explore these materials, gaining insights to enhance educational initiatives within their communities.
Reasons for the climate change and its impact is a problem, that should concern everyone. It’s an ongoing an issue for the whole planet, Czechia included. As the individuals as well as the whole society we will face the impact of climate change one way or the other. If we have enough information beforehand, we will be able to cope and adapt much better. Education in plays very important role in this effort.
