Description

Facing a climate change which may have multidimensional adverse impacts on the longevity and safety of existing bridges, the initiative aims to (i) develop a framework for the probabilistic assessment of the impact of climate change on the structural health of existing bridges, by coupling climate risk evaluation and health monitoring techniques;(ii) present the latest technological updates on SHM of bridges to the scientific community as well as to staff of consultancy companies and public entities;(iii) promote technological advances and business initiatives around the life-cycle management

Summary of the results

In collaboration with Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) and Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), the initial objectives were to: (i) develop a framework for the probabilistic assessment of the impact of climate change on the structural health of existing bridges, by coupling climate risk evaluation and health monitoring techniques; (ii) present the latest technological updates on SHM of bridges to the scientific community as well as to staff of consultancy companies and public entities; (iii) promote technological advances and business initiatives around the life-cycle management of bridges.
The 1st objective was clearly accomplished with the development and publication of an integrated assessment approach for the adaptation of bridges to climate change in “A roadmap for an integrated assessment approach for climate change adaptation of concrete bridges”, in the Journal of Bridge Engineering from the American Society of Civil Engineers. The 2nd objective was full accomplished with the development and publication of the “general procedure to couple climate modeling and SHM” in the same publication. The 3th goal was partially accomplished (as it was not possible to organize the workshop in Oslo) with the organization of the workshop in Lisbon, and in particular the seminar “A road for adaptation of bridges to climate change” and its conclusions. All information about the project are available on the project’s website: http://climabridge.ulusofona.pt.
