Description

M.A.S. is a production and engineering company from the refrigeration and energy recovery industry (electricity, heat and cold). The project concerns the production of innovative hybrid ice water chillers. We have conducted R&D works to develop a product concept based on the use of waste heat for cold production. The new chillers will offer a wide range of operating options depending on the ambient air temperature, and the device will be much more energy efficient than similar solutions available on the market.

As part of the project, M.A.S. will build an additional manufacturing area and equip the site with machines needed to launch the production of the chillers. The final version of the solution will be developed by a scientific unit which will also streamline its operating and safety scenarios. An energy and technical audit will make it possible to improve the energy efficiency of the device, reduce CO2 emissions from its operation (by 0.04 tons in the first year after the completion of the project), and make the product more competitive.

We also plan to cooperate with the Norwegian partner, Ocean Consulting AS, that will support us substantially in the development of the solution and its iteration for the maritime industry. The partner will also provide advisory and mentoring services concerning sales and distribution on international markets in that challenging industry. We expect that these innovative devices will attract foreign clients, especially from the EU countries where the demand for ecological energy solutions has been growing considerably.

Summary of project results

The project scope was related to the final development, implementation, and further production of a new type of industrial refrigeration device (hybrid adsorption - compressor chiller) enabling operation in many configurations, depending on the current demand for the cold and atmospheric conditions. The device can utilize waste heat to produce cold water. The new device was an extension of the previous offer for customers. In addition, the possibility of adapting both hybrid chillers and standard chillers to the requirements of the maritime market allows for continuing operations in the manufacturing of refrigeration equipment and expanding the group of customers of the company''s products. As a result of the project implementation, the company’s portfolio was extended due to the introduction of a new type of cooling equipment to the offer. Innovative products allow the expansion of the current sales network, enter new markets, and increase the cooperation between Poland and Norway and other EEA countries.

The new product is based on ecological refrigerants in the compression unit and water as a working medium in the adsorption unit. Due to the hybrid construction, it allows to reduce of electricity consumption related to the production of cold. This translates into environmental benefits for customers and the region, such as reduction of pollutants emissions. This created the image of M.A.S. as a Polish entity offering innovative solutions for the industrial sector, and caring for the environment.

The project concerned the implementation by M.A.S. innovative hybrid ice water chillers.

The project aimed to increase the competitiveness of M.A.S. through the implementation of a new, hybrid and energy-efficient chillers based on ecological refrigerants. The project involved cooperation with the Norwegian partner in the preparation of a special version ready for implementation in the maritime industry. The project scope involved infrastructure purchases which allowed to start the production of new units and development works. In the longer term, the organization of sales activities of new M.A.S products among the new clients is planned and increasing product recognition in the hermetic maritime market, in which Polish suppliers have a negligible share.

The project goal was achieved.

The following activities were carried out as part of the project:

  • Research and development works that had developed a concept of a new product that allows the use of waste heat for the production of cold, while providing the customer with a wide range of work variants depending on the atmospheric air temperature, allowing a significant increase of energy efficiency in comparison to competitors'' devices available on the market.
  • Construction works of an additional production area and equip it with the necessary infrastructure to produce new refrigeration equipment.

The most important results of the project are:

  • 1 innovative product developed and commercialized (hybrid ice water chillers),
  • 2 created jobs,
  • 1 submitted applications for the protection of the intellectual property right,
  • 0,06 tons of estimated reduction of annual CO2 emission (bigger amounts planned to achieve after implementation of a new device in client’s facilities),
  • 0,01 GWh of estimated reduction of annual electricity consumption (bigger amounts planned to achieve after implementation of a new device in client’s facilities.

By implementing the project and achieving those results, it is possible to obtain additional benefits for the company and the region:

  • expanding the sales range to new customer industries and export markets,
  • increasing the competitiveness of M.A.S. in the domestic and international markets,
  • creation of new jobs ensuring further development and attractive remuneration,
  • establishing technical and quality standards in the refrigeration equipment sector,
  • strengthening cooperation with international entities,
  • increase in the research and production potential of M.A.S. - increase in expenditure on R&D activities, conducting further R&D work, increasing qualifications of technical and production staff,
  • stimulating the development of the industry - managing the existing technological gap in the field of ecological chilled water units,
  • implementation of environmentally friendly products that support the principle of sustainable development - allowing for the optimization of customer processes.

The new product is based on new, ecological refrigerants and, due to its hybrid structure, will reduce electricity consumption related to cold production. This will affect an environmental benefit for customers and the region, as emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases will be reduced, and there will be no need to store and use significant amounts of harmful factors in production processes.

The implementation of the project will affect the image of M.A.S. as a Polish entity offering innovative solutions for the industrial sector, caring for the environment and being a determinant of the quality of Polish entrepreneurs.

Summary of bilateral results

The Applicant cooperated with a Partner who provided knowledge on how to prepare the device in a version dedicated to the maritime market. The partner provided knowledge about the requirements and certification procedures, as well as methods of mechanical and chemical protection for the device that may be exposed to the harmful effects of seawater and the instability of the device foundation. In this respect, the device was redesigned, also because in these conditions it is possible to use seawater in the process of generating cold. Heat exchangers, stabilization system and other system components were designed/selected for this purpose. Cooperation with the Partner was not limited to consulting in this area. The Partner supported the Applicant in providing knowledge about maritime sales processes, distribution channels, and sales possibilities. The cooperation with the Norwegian Partner in the field of adapting equipment to the specific requirements of the maritime market was also consistent with the company''s policy, which assumes expanding the target group and offering effective dedicated solutions. The project was of great importance for the development of the company, as increasing the production potential was a key issue in further development beyond currently implemented research and development activities.
