In the face of the pandemic, unwillingness to touch various surfaces have become apparent. Nevertheless, the need to use mundane devices (e. g. elevator buttons, ATM screens) is as relevant as it was before. Moreover, importance of physical interactions will continue to grow. Taking the aforementioned, this project aims to develop, in close collaboration with partners from Vytautas Magnus University and International Development Norway, touchable holographic displays interactions. During project implementation, software will be created for holographic displays and assembled components existing on the market. While performing certain actions, the user would not physically touch the screen only ‘hanging in the air” and visible exclusively for him hologram. Target groups: public (culture) sector, healthcare, industry (production).
The aim of the project is to create a wide range of touchable holographic displays operating in a wide range of conditions (from indoor to extremely harsh outdoor conditions), which could serve as an alternative for touch screens (physical touch). The project concept is based on: the integration of various manufacturers and specification parts and elements into one system; artificial intelligence algorithms that recognize real commands from random movements; communication channels in the system and protocols between the elements and the system equipment controlling them.
The final version of project idea was formulated in consultations with the Norwegian partner. The partnership is expected to have long-term economic and strategic impact. Upon completion of the project, IDN will help to commercialise products developed during implementation of the project and adopt them for the Norwegian market.
Summary of project results
The idea for the project arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, at the beginning of 2021. The goal is to create a touch-controlled hologram, although until then they were created only as a means of rendering. Innovation at the time was addressing the problem where every touched surface could become the habitat of the virus. When using a hologram, there is no touch surface, so there is no need to disinfect it. Secondly, the hologram saves space and can be installed in existing structures. Thirdly, due to its structure, it can work under the most adverse conditions - to be touched in extreme cold with gloves or dirty hands.
- Created an air-touch holographic video rendering interface that will allow you to replace the touch screens currently in use on the market. The technology developed will include a wide range of holographic displays that can be applied to various conditions – even harsher ones;
- This technology is particularly relevant for the public sector, healthcare-related services, industry and manufacturing industries to ensure the spread of viruses.
The intended goals of the project were achieved, the company created what it planned to create, the bilateral partnership was useful.
The hologram, developed by the company and it''s partners, has a wide range of applications – it can be used wherever a touch screen is used, for example, in trade, ordering services or paying for them. The hologram gives a great visual impression and admiration, especially when seeing it for the first time. As a result, the innovation is easily applied in the entertainment industry, museums, galleries and similar areas.
Summary of bilateral results
Partners in Norway played the role foreseen in the project and even more so – they offered valuable insights about the Scandinavian market, shared their vision of how the product could be distributed and developed there.
