Description
The project aims at strengthening the existing collaborations between Romania and Norway in the area of the correctional services. It also envisages best practice sharing and increasing the knowledge and experience of European prison specialists as regards preventing the radicalisation phenomenon in prison and reducing overcrowding. To this purpose, a high level conference on the topics mentioned above will be organized in Romania, during 1-4 April 2019. Summary of the results
One conference „Contemporary challenges in European prison systems - Preventing radicalization in prison and reducing overcrowding” was organized in Sinaia (Romania) during 01-04.04.2019 under the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council. The event was attended by 85 participants of 21 EU and non-EU states including Romania and Norway (representatives of penitentiary and probation systems, experts on radicalization and representatives of Radicalization Awareness Network, representatives of the Romanian institutions with competences in preventing and fighting radicalization, etc.).
During the Conference the latest trends and practices on radicalization and overcrowding in penitentiaries were debated as well as other topics connected to the activity of the penitentiary system (treatment of detainees, social reintegration programs, training of penitentiary staff etc.) creating the premises for increasing the knowledge of participants.
The event contributed to best practice exchange between Norway and Romania, as representatives of both correctional systems presented their experience on the above topics, including on the collaboration under Norway Grants. As well, the Norwegian delegation presented the national practice on de-radicalisation and disengagement of extreme violence. The initiative can be considered best practice as the conference tackled the radicalization and overcrowding in prisons in terms of methods and programs used by different correctional systems.
