Description
The project tackles the problem of segregation of the media space and distorted picture of Roma that acctording to the ECRI Report on the Czech Republic 2020 perpetuate antiziganistic attitudes in Czech society. This project will create four informational videos, capturing the reflection of stereotypical statements about Roma by young Romani women and men , who are the main beneficiaries of the project. The series of videos published on the social media of Tuke.TV will be created by eight young people under the guidance of a mentor and experienced audio-visual content creators (members of Tuke.TV). The aim of the project is to create a space for empowering young people by raising knowledge about advocacy work, sharing experiences and know-how. This will enable young people to formulate their needs, create self-presentation in public space, motivate them to be active part of civil society and entering the media space.
Summary of project results
The media space of the Czech Republic is made up of media that, due to their structure, focus and way of sharing information, do not produce balanced content in the current situation. The low visibility of representatives of Roma communities in active roles in the creation of media and audiovisual content or the low frequency of quality content based on verifiable and truthful information is one of the manifestations of segregation and bias in the media design process and often leads to the reproduction of anti-Giganist attitudes and views. the Czech Republic 2020). Segregation and non-objectivity in the media space undermine the principles of participatory democracy and are therefore a burning issue for civil society.
The project met the goal in the production of 4 information videos. The videos serve as a platform for utilizing the skills that the target group has acquired through activities organized within the project.
The project empowered 8 young representatives of a disadvantaged group, who acquired argumentation skills in the field of breaking down prejudices, presentation skills and the ability to participate in the technical side of video production and postproduction.
Eight young Roma men with an interest in audiovisual production were involved in the project activities. Thanks to their participation, videos were created that can be viewed on social networks even after the end of the project. The Museum of Romani Culture used the opportunity to use videos as an introduction to the debate on prejudices and stereotypes in its educational programs for secondary schools. The mentors of the educational program received positive responses to the videos and the ensuing debate. The Museum continues in this activity. The impact of the project will thus multiply.
The positive impact on the participants themselves can be deduced from the fact that the project participants are interested in Tuke TV''s activities beyond the project. The project activities motivated them to create engaged media content. They have acquired basic competencies for his work, they are familiar with the process of creating audiovisual content, they know how to appear in front of the camera and present their attitudes to stereotypical ideas about the Roma. We conclude that by creating an environment for non-formal education in the field of media production, we have contributed to solving the problem of segregated media and educational space.
