Description

The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the city of Litovel. The global goal of the strategy is a mitigation of impacts of climate change by planned adaptation action while the current environmental and sustainable development standards remain unchanged. The town Litovel has a great interest in reaction to this expected change in its area and wants to face the consequences with the help of the adaptation and mitigation measures. It is a long-term strategic priority.
The Adaptation Strategy will be proceeding in the course of adaptation to the climate change in the matter of the environment and the humans in a thoughtful considerate way.

Summary of project results

The global goal of the Adaptation Strategy is to mitigate the effects of climate change by adapting to them while maintaining standards of living conditions and sustainable economic development. Our city has a special interest in responding to climate change and its effects on its territory and facing the consequences through appropriate adaptation and mitigation measures. We perceive this topic as a strategic priority of long-term importance.

The need to implement the project resulted from the serious environmental situation in our city and its surroundings. Classic negative manifestations and impacts of climate change, such as heat waves, extreme hydrological phenomena, long-term drought, floods, soil degradation, deterioration of air conditions or negative developments in the area of biodiversity, are accompanied by unstable socio-economic development, which manifests itself mainly in insufficient or slow response to changing climate. Without an appropriate, high-quality and well-developed adaptation strategy, these manifestations will have increasingly significant impacts on life in Litovla.

In the initial phase of project implementation, we performed an analysis of the vulnerability of the territory in our village. The priority topics in the field of environmental protection and climate change that we have identified include, for example, the restoration of the original landscape matrix according to historical documents, which will help improve the permeability of the landscape, the care of wetlands and springs, the restoration of public greenery, the removal of inappropriate and non-functional elements of land reclamation and the improvement waste management. We will also focus on energy efficiency in city buildings or support for the use of renewable energy sources.

The adaptation strategy was discussed with the public at the Litovel festival, where we received suggestions and opinions on the state of the environment from the residents of our city. The survey showed that an important topic for our citizens is, for example, protection against floods or noise and dust that arise in connection with transport.

Summary of bilateral results

Our cooperation with foreign partners was negatively affected by the ongoing pandemic and it was not possible to implement it to the extent we originally intended. Partner organizations provided us with examples of good practice and their experiences. The involvement of the Norwegian partner undoubtedly increased public interest in the implementation of our project.
