Description

The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the city of Olomouc, which will take into account all the risk factors of climate change for this municipality. Part of the project is the creation of an action plan with proposals for appropriate measures at the investment and non-investment level.

Summary of project results

In response to the progressing climate change (and its manifestations in the Central Moravia region according to current scenarios of climate development models at regional level by 2050), the City of Olomouc considers the development of the City''s Adaptation Strategy (hereinafter the Strategy).

The output of the project is a comprehensive strategic planning document that credibly and comprehensively describes the current state and outlook for the future. In the document, we set priorities and goals for our city in individual areas, which include agriculture, forestry and water management, and environmental protection. For example, in the case of surrounding territorial ecological stability, it was found that the greatest negative effect on wetland biotopes and floodplain forests is the gradual drying out of protected sites and the lowering of the groundwater level caused by "surviving" melioration interventions from the past and the regulation of most watercourses. Higher numbers of animals, in turn, have a negative effect on the growth of rejuvenating trees. Forest stands are degraded by inappropriate forest management, when monocultures of the main tree species of the same age are often planted. And invasive species are also a problem.

The adaptation strategy analyzes our city territory and its surroundings, brings proposals for specific adaptation and mitigation measures, and also brings a list of specific projects and investment plans that make possible the goals we set in the adaptation strategy. Our goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, limit the adverse effects of climate change not only on our residents, and create a city that will be pleasant for the lives of our residents. At the same time, the document serves as a tool for fulfilling the obligations arising from the Covenant of Mayors in the field of climate change and energy.

Among the recommended measures are, for example, the construction of green roofs, the increase of greenery in the streets and the improvement of the green care system, the construction of new water features and the optimization of public lighting.
