Description

The main aim of the Project is implementation of measures which will contribute to mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the City of Bardejov. Within the Project, the action plan for mitigation and adaptation to climate change will be elaborated as a comprehensive short and medium term strategic document that will define the activities of the city focused on reducing the CO2 emissions and adaptation to climate change. In addition, hard measures will be carried out in line with the action plan covering the following areas: building sector (reducing the energy costs of the Primary school, efficient use of water in the Primary school), energy saving solutions (modernisation of interior lightening), transport (development of sustainable mobility through the promotion and development of cycling), green and blue infrastructure (planting of trees, Building natural elements to increase air humidity and retain moisture, creation of water elements), waste management provision of biodegradable waste collection and recovery in the city), soft measures.

The Bilateral Project Partner – the Norwegian Molde Municipality will cooperate in developing and providing know-how in the preparation of the action plan.

Main target group are the citizens of Bardejov, with special focus on children and youth.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • Elaboration of action plan as a medium term strategic document that define the activities of the city focused on reducing the CO2 emissions and adaptation to climate change,
  • Implementation of technical measures to reduce CO2 emissions and make the urban environment more resilient to climate change.

As a part of the city action plan following soft measures were implemented:

1. Analysis of the current situation of greenhouse gases from individual sectors,

2. Analysis of the climate conditions,

3. Risk analysis, analysis of the territory vulnerability to climate change,

4. Monitoring of areas with rapid water drain and extreme erosion or slipping hazard,

5. Establishment of a “permanent exhibition - exposition” on the implementation of measures and education on reducing the impact of CO2 on the environment,

6. Education programme for primary school pupils and secondary school students, including the public,

Following individual hard measures on climate change mitigation and adaptation were implemented in the city of Bardejov within the Project:

1. Reducing the energy costs of the primary school including thermal  insulation,

2. Modernization of interior lighting of the primary school,

3. Purchase of two bicycles for Town Hall employees,

4. Purchase of four bike stands,

5.-9. Planting trees and groups of trees at 5 city public spaces,

10. Building natural elements to increase air humidity and retain moisture: flowering extensive meadow,

11. Support of the biodegradable waste collection in the city,

12. Efficient use of water in the primary school and it further usage for irrigation, collecting rainwater from roof of the school building into surface water retention vessels,

13.-15. Constructing the natural elements to reduce air temperature by shading and to cool three public areas,

16. Exterior vertical greenery including 80 climbing woody plants at the swimming pool fencing,

17. Creation of water elements in the built-up areas in the form of water fog system at Town Hall Square.

Overall, 23 measures on climate change mitigation and adaptation were implemented.

About 0.5 % of Slovak population benefits from living in more climate change resilient and responsive area of city of Bardejov.
