Description

The main objective of the Project is to raise awareness of mitigation and adaptation on climate change among pupils, teachers, and the public by focusing on theoretical education, together with practical implementation.

Main Project activities are as follows:

  • Environmental education (thematic updating of curricula of existing subjects, elaboration of the separate subject Ecology in practice),
  • Courses connected to lectures together with tree planting in the school area together with Project Partners,
  • Installation of surface rainwater collection containers for watering the Walipini greenhouse,
  • Building green infrastructure elements building green walls,
  • Building a Walipini greenhouse,
  • Increasing the proportion of greenery planting fruit trees, creating beds with greenery with lower irrigation requirements,
  • Awareness raising activities (workshops and lectures).

The project contributes to the Roma student''s inclusion under the supervision of vocational teachers.

There are four Slovak Project Partners involved in the Project:  Primary school Tisovec, Urban Forest company, the City of Tisovec and the Partnership Muránska Planina - Čierny Hron. Partners will collaborate in awareness raising activities.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • systematic education of students on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on water retention, waste reduction and greenery
  • implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to reach support waste separation, reduction of waste production and its further re-use, rainwater retention, biodiversity and share of greenery, innovative elements for adaptation to climate change, building the elements of green infrastructure 

Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:

  • Environmental education through updated curricula of existing subjects, new school environmental program focused mainly on plants growing and greenery, waste sorting, waste reduction, water retention, educational trail
  • Installation of waste sorting equipment - collecting containers, building vermicomposter
  • Building a Walipini greenhouse
  • Installation of surface rainwater collection containers for watering the walipini greenhouse
  • Building green infrastructure elements - building green wall
  • Increasing the proportion of greenery - planting fruit trees, creating beds with greenery with lower irrigation requirements
  • Awareness-raising activities

Overall, 5 physical climate change responsive measures were carried out in school and school campus, more than 500 students participated the awareness raising campaign and 34 open access education materials were created.

The Project reached more than 1 thousand of persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on students and general public as beneficiaries.
