Description

The Project is focused on raising the environmental awareness of high school students, primary school pupils and the general public in a small district town.

The main objective of the project is to raise awareness of mitigation and adaptation on climate change of target groups by focusing on theoretical education together with practical implementation.

The raising of environmental awareness shall be achieved by the elaboration of the school environmental program, together with updating the curricula of existing subjects. Within the framework of the material and organizational provision of teaching, worksheets on specific topics will be created.

In synergy with the mentioned soft measures, the following hard measures will be carried out:

- Creating leisure time activities in order to educate the students - planting of trees as a part of the leisure time activity together with the Partners,

- Building eco-pedagogical areas/training areas using natural and technical elements,

- Energy saving, supporting a suitable microclimate,

- Promoting biodiversity,

- Reducing waste generation and recovery,

- Water retention measures.

The cooperation with the 3 Slovak Partners is planned: Primary School of Jozef Cíger Hronský in the City of Krupina, the Urban Forest Company and the City of Krupina. This cooperation (lectures, brigades, workshops) will enable to involve a large number of people in activities to raise awareness and to adapt to climate change.

Summary of project results

The Project aimed to address following challenges in the field of climate change adaptation and mitigation:

  • systematic education of students on impact of climate change and measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change with focus on biodiversity, alternative energy sources, use of rainwater and sustainable environment,
  • implement hard measures on climate change adaptation being in synergy with soft educational activities to reach energy savings, support suitable microclimate, share of greenery, waste separation and biodiversity.

Following Project activities were implemented within the Project:

  • Environmental education through updated school environmental program focused mainly on environmental education and lifestyle,
  • Building a sensory walkway and educational trail, insect houses,
  • Using the solar energy for outdoor campus lighting,
  • Supporting a suitable microclimate for students with a Fountain powered by solar energy,
  • Building a green wall inside the school campus,
  • Installation of waste bins for waste separation and composting,
  • Installation of surface rainwater collection containers,
  • Planting trees - creation of parks with greenery with lower demands on irrigation and with fruit trees.

Overall, 5 physical climate change responsive measures were carried out in school and school campus, more than 1 000 students participated the awareness raising campaign and 10 open access education materials were created.

The Project reached more than 1 thousand of persons selfreporting having more climate friendly behaviour due to implemented Project activities with impact mainly on students as beneficiaries.
