Description

The main goal of the project is the partial restoration of the most famous monument in Košice – the St Elisabeth Cathedral. Located in the historical centre of the city, surrounded by a famous park with a fountain, the St Elisabeth Cathedral is probably the place most visited by tourists in Košice. The St Elisabeth Cathedral is very well known and the restoration opens up new potential for increased cultural tourism. The intention is to ensure recovery of the interior in order to preserve all of its historical value, with respect to its potential use by the archdiocese, but also in view of the public interest in this heritage. At the same time the interior restoration will result in restoration and where necessary renewal of selected elements of furnishing located in the aisle of the church. The Project Partners, the city of Košice and the Košice self-governing region, are very important stakeholders as far as promotion is concerned. It is expected that the restoration will directly and indirectly impact on employment and economic development in the area.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was the reconstruction of the historical monument - national cultural monument - part of the Saint Elisabeth Cathedral - Tower of King Matias which contributed to the increase of the visit and the development of tourism in Kosice. The main project output of the project which was achieved was the restoration of the Matej Tower in St. Elizabeth Cathedral and the four altars. These outputs could not be realized without financial support from the EEA grant in way to be accessible to the general public, preserving historical and ecclesial values. Restoration of the tower and the four altars allowed access to the elements of ecclesiastical tourism and we estimate an increase of 30% in St. Elisabeth Cathedral´s visitors during year 2017.
