Summary of project results

The origins of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska date back to 1600 when the governor of Cracow funded the construction of the first of the chapels, modeled on the Jerusalem Chapel of the Holy Cross. Shortly thereafter, more chapels were erected and arranged on the Jerusalem model. Today, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a unique cultural monument, in which the natural landscape was used as a setting for the symbolic representation in the form of chapels and roads of the individual stations of the Passion of Christ and the life of his mother Mary. Kalwaria Zebrzydowska was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.  The aim of the project was to take measures to improve the conditions and accessibility of the infrastructure, which limited the diversity of the cultural and educational program. Implementation of the project was intended to attract new audiences to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.

The project involved conservation work on eight historic chapels along the route of the pathway. Conservation renovation made it possible to restore these places, but also the entire Calvary establishment to its former glory, show the architectural craftsmanship and beauty of the landscape.
The project''s implementation was aimed at the renovation of three historic buildings whose condition threatened to collapse. A Heritage and Dialogue Center was created in the buildings, where a new cultural offer is implemented, an exhibition (museum) is presented, and a place for community meetings is available.
As a result of the project, 15 people were trained - monks and volunteers, as well as employees of the Monastery, who are involved in the implementation of the cultural offer (guided tours, organization of events). In addition, 100 people from the local community were trained. Implementation of the project made it possible to create a completely new cultural and educational offer. A total of 84 new cultural events were conducted during the project.

As a result of the project, eight shrines located on the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Route were renovated, and three historic monastery buildings were renovated and changed their use, which, after changing their function, are used for educational and cultural purposes. As a result of the project, three new jobs were created.
Implementation of the project contributed to the development and making more attractive the cultural and educational offer of the place. Among other things, the restored facilities currently present temporary thematic exhibitions, hold workshops and seminars on art history, art workshops, open-air painting and photography workshops, ecological workshops for many audience groups, e.g. families with children, children, seniors, youth, people with disabilities.

Summary of bilateral results

Thanks to the mutual exchange of knowledge and experience, as well as through the implemented cyclical partnership meetings, the practical knowledge of the community gathered around Kalwaria Zebrzydowska on the preservation of cultural heritage has been significantly enriched. Building a partnership relationship with the Norwegians has contributed to the free exchange of knowledge on monument management between two experienced institutions.
