Description

The village of Štiavnické bane is an old mining village. Only one circular bastion which is currently in a damaged condition has been maintained from the former extensive Renaissance Fortification System consisting of 21 gates, bastions and towers. The main objective of the project is to stop the progressive damage, to reconstruct the bastion and on the preserved historical footage build a new extension on its former foundations. The aim of the project is to implement a historic nature trail including the most important sights of the village and to install the information boards. The reconstructed bastion will become a new distinctive feature in the village which will be accessible to the general and professional public. The project establishes a new exhibition about the astronomer Maximilian Hell The main group targeted by the project is the wider public including families with children, youths, and students. Another very important group consists of the national and foreign tourists. The aim is to raise awareness about our cultural heritage, to provide information on revivalists, who were born or worked in the village as well as explain and acquaint people with the importance of unique history of mining and technical heritage of this village.

Summary of project results

The main aim of the project was to stop the degregation of the Stiavnicke Bane bastion, to reconstruct it and to open the monument for locals, tourist and the public. The bastion has become a new significant landmark of the village. It was also required to build two new footpaths in order to reach the bastion, because of hilly, craggy terrain. The aim of the project was also to create an educational walkway throughout the most important sights of the village, containing information boards in three languages (Slovak, English, German). Bastion and its surrounding will be used for various cultural events, such as workshops, festivals, comunity meetings, sky observation etc. The most significant output of the project is renewed and reconstructed bastion, opened for the public, as a new significant landmark of the village. Also the other outputs are important: two new expositions : exposition of Maximilian Hell, world-famous astronomer, and exposition of the village Štiavnické Bane and its world and European uniqueness. According to archeological research and the old photos of the building, the new extension of bastion was built - place where two new expositions have come into existence. New plaster of the building, roof covering, wooden and brick floor were made, windows and doors were replaced.
