Description

The project intend to provide Ecoiberia with a technologically advanced laboratory, so that PET flakes produced for the detection of potential contaminants and non-compliant materials, which may jeopardize the standards of security. Thus, the result will be a top-quality raw material, which will be used in the production of new plastic bottles.  This project, entitled "Bottle to bottle: circular economy for plastic bottles in Portugal" has as its main objective the increase of recycling of plastic bottles, through innovative solutions in this sector and modern technologies that will allow the reintroduction of a top quality raw material (recycled PET flakes), for the production of new plastic bottles.

Summary of project results

The project entitled “Bottle to bottle: circular economy for plastic bottles in Portugal” is based on two complementary approaches: on the one hand, it aims to provide Ecoibéria from a technologically advanced laboratory, so that they can be tested
PET flakes produced to detect potential contaminants and non-toxic materials compliant products that could jeopardize safety standards. Thus, the result will be a Top Quality raw material, which will be used in the production of new bottles of
plastic (circular economy). On the other hand, in this project a highly innovative technology: laser flake separator. This technology of Laser separation will allow for much faster, more efficient and intelligent sorting of plastic, producing a continuous flow of Top Quality flakes.

The project entitled “circular economy for plastic bottles in Portugal” aimed to increase the recycling of plastic bottles, through modern equipment and technologies that allowed the reintroduction of a top quality raw material
(recycled PET flakes), to production of new plastic bottles, for production of new plastic bottles. This project creates 5 jobs (4 men and 1 woman). The project was developed in partnership with the Extrapolymers laboratory
and the entity Águas de Monchique, having achieved all the initially proposed  objectives, namely:
• Channel recycled plastic to beverage producers (for the production of new bottles);
• Implement technology for decontaminating recycled material;
• Ensure the highest standards of quality and safety in Bottle to Bottle material.

In term of results, it can be said the project contributes for Objective nº1 and Output 1.1 of the Environment Program, as follows:

i. Ensuring the good environmental status of ecosystems in Portugal: the project contributes to the good environmental status of ecosystems as it increases plastic recycling, but at the same time there is better
selection of superior quality PET flakes, which will be incorporated into new bottles. In this way, we contribute to the circular economy and to the reduction of plastics that end up in landfills;
ii. Reduce the adverse effects of pollution and other harmful human activities on the environment: plastic is one of the main materials that contributes to pollution, and the tendency must necessarily go towards increasing its
recycling and incorporation into new materials. This is one of the objectives of project, and which is at the heart of Ecoibéria’s own activity;
iii. Increase resilience to climate change through mitigation measures and adaptation towards a low-carbon economy: climate change are the consequence of a set of human behaviors and a intensive use of resources, which are not reused or
reintroduced into new industrial processes. Thus, this project promotes a low carbon economy, as it promotes recycling, reuse and reintroduction of PET flakes in new food packaging;
iv. Reduce economic and social disparities: the project contributes to hiring human resources, with 5 new HR expected by the end of the year project, which thus contributes to the competitiveness of the territory and the promotion
good working conditions and opportunities for career progression. One company that hires HR and provides them with good conditions, with salaries above average, contributes to reducing economic and social disparities.
