Description

The purpose of this project is to apply new technology in the production of painted fireproof and durable facade wood . For fire resistance, the goal is to achieve the Bs1D0 fire safety standard, and in terms of durability, the aim is to provide cladding with a maintenance interval of up to 15 years and a service life of up to 70 years.

Thermal moification is an energy intensive process that also emits significant amounts of carbon dioxide. The project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the amount of energy needed to produce the product through an innovative co-incineration system.

Project promoter will acquire a new painting line, thermal chambers and co-incineration system for energy efficient thermal chambers residual gases. Also, a new technology will be developed to produce thermally modified painted cladding products conforming to Bs1D0 standard and developed capability to produce and sell that product. Achieved fire safety certificate for thermally modified wood. Development shall also include a new technology for the production of durable painted thermally modified cladding products. The project hwill  reduce CO2 emissions by 645.1 tonnes per year and energy consumption by 347.1 MWh per year.

Summary of project results

The project has been successfully implemented despite some changes to the originally planned activities. For example, it was not possible to build a joint combustion system for thermal treatment chambers, because the new thermal furnaces are built further away from the original planned location. In order to still ensure the desired reduction of the CO2 footprint and a more efficient energy system, preheating with flue gases was introduced instead. The achieved results from the aspect of CO2 and resource efficiency are comparable.

As part of the project, a new paint line was installed and recipes for standard products and works were developed. Material heat treatment tests for setting heat treatment programs have been completed.

The project has been successfully implemented. The color line is installed and works. Recipes for standard products/works have been developed. Thermal furnaces T5 -T8 have been installed and are in operation, the solar park installed on the building with a size of 100 kWh is in operation. Material heat treatment tests for setting heat treatment programs have been completed. For the successful implementation of the project, a paint-producing partner (Tikkurila Oy and Teknos OÜ in combination with the company WoodSafe Timber Protection AB) has been involved, with whom the combinations of heat treatment and different color parameters and the fire resistance of the created solutions will be tested. Product development continues beyond the project period.

The thermo-treated boards painted by Thermory have been certified by the Swedish certification agency RISE and fire-class certificates have been issued for the products by the Latvian test laboratory MEKA.
