Description

By addressing climate change and its impact on the society, the project aim is improved use of rainwater for both educational and practical purposes. The objective of the project is adaption to climate change, specifically flood and drought prevention and increased public awareness when it comes to rainwater harvesting, recycling and reuse. The project implementation will achieve improvements of the microclimate in buildings and at campus of the Lomnica school, it will increase the functional and aesthetic value of the Lomnica campus, it will improve the quality of education about the climate change at primary schools in the region of Vranov nad Topľou, it will increase the involvement of the Lomnica citizens in community activities, and increase the interest of the general public when it comes to climate change. Mainly children and students will benefit from the project implementation.

Summary of project results

The main goal of the project was to demonstrate rainwater management practices in the region of Vranov nad Topľou through implementation of adaptation measures on the example of Lomnica Primary School, and to educate children, teachers and wider public in opportunities for prevention from the climate change. The project included the following practical activities demonstrating 11 adaptation measures and providing positive outputs: (1) construction of a green cover on 338 m2 upon the roof of school building, (2) reduction of hard paved areas on 81 m2 in the front of school building, (3) installation of vegetation paving on 63 m2 on the parking lot, (4) installation of water permeable pavement on 80 m2 on the walking zone in the front of school building, (5) creation of rain beds on 54 m2 in the front of school building, (6) creation of a garden labyrinth on 164 m2 with gravel paths, decorative and fruity scrubs in the front of school building, (7) planting four well-grown trees and many other decorative scrubs in a park in the front of school building, (8) creation of new grasslands on 255 m2 in the front of school building, (9) installation of 20 m rain gutters and two barrels for collecting rain water from the roof of school building, (10) installation of 7 patio pots with flowers on the terrace of school building, (11) creation of a vegetable garden on 5 m2 behind the school building. In addition to practical activities listed above, the project also included the following educational activities for school pupils, teachers and adults as well as public awareness and medial activities: (A) organising an opening and closing informative meetings for 50 adults living in the town part Lomnica of Vranov nad Topľou, (B) organising opening and closing conference for authorities of the Vranov nad Topľou municipality, mayors of villages from the Vranov nad Topľou region and for climate change experts & NGOs from the Eastern Slovakia, (C) organising a methodological training about the climate change for 30 teachers from primary schools of the Vranov nad Topľou region, (D) developing and testing education plans about the climate change for primary schools, (E) organising three working actions for volunteers, teachers and children implementing practical adaptation measures in the surroundings of school building, (F) establishing a website about the programme and project (aims, context, activities, photo galleries), (G) medial activities – press meetings, press articles, TV & radio broadcast shots for regional medias.
