The objective of the initiative is to acquire knowledge about establishing and running a municipal company focused on collecting, processing and disposing of municipal and sorted waste. Via a study trip and visiting different facilities, the applicant shall get an overview as regards suitable technologies and information about the ways and system of running such companies thanks to the lectures provided by the experienced Norwegian partner, KS.
The initiative shall lead to a subsequent implementation of acquired knowledge in the region which would be
beneficial for all involved municipalities.
Summary of the results
Jilemnicko - the Union of Municipalities started operating its own waste collection company in the spring of 2022. Thanks to the study trip, it was possible to gain new knowledge and perspectives about waste disposal and new approaches. The participants (representatives of Jilemnicko municipalities) were presented with a similar issue in Norwegian conditions. Similar intermunicipal company was visited, which already has a long history and a lot of experience and it also provides a much wider service to citizens. A big inspiration was the solution of the collection centre and the Re-use center, the operation of the envicenter, as well as the compost processing system and its further use. Thanks to a visit to the sorting line and the incinerator, it was found that the direction the Czech side started is similar as in Norway. Large regional sorting lines operate here as well. On the contrary, the Norwegian system of commodity classification was surprising. Citizens here only sort mixed municipal waste and then put all separated waste into one container, which then goes to a large sorting line. Although this system seemed less efficient and more economically demanding than the one in the Czech Republic, this trend is already being discussed at the highest levels of politics. Overall, the study trip was very inspiring, and provided overview about the wider context of Norwegian waste management, and some examples of good practice were taken as inspiration.
