Description

MCSU is a public university. It educates at 12 faculties and over 80 fields of study. Interesting for the applicant is the preparation of teachers for such work as well as the cooperation of educ.institutions with students and families of immigrants (cultural differences, ideological differences,etc.). The aim of the project is to create conditions conducive to the professional development of academic staff of the Didactics Department employed at the Institute of Pedagogy of the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin. The participants would like to learn about the education model in force in Iceland, especially at the level of initial education, which is the basis for further educational development. The purpose of the study visit is also to develop participants’ knowledge and skills, to open to further cooperation, and to create academic bonds between scientists. The visit is part of the needs of the Didactics Department of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, whose employees will participate in the project due to dynamic changes in the models and curriculum of pre-school and early school education. The next goal of the project is to conduct a case study of an educational institution based on the principles of openness and prepared to work with children for whom the current language is not native, as well as familiarize yourself with Icelandic solutions for implementing multiculturalism in the education of school children. An important goal of the project is to establish a longer cooperation between the applicant''s party (Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology) and Laugarnesskóli in Reykjavik. It is assumed to launch an expert system, bilateral consultations and to develop a program of study trips for students of Preschool and Early School Education as well as developing methodical materials for learning about Polish culture by the Laugarnesskóli teaching staff in Reykjavik and materials for learning about Icelandic culture for MCSU students.

Summary of project results

The Study Visit within the framework of the project was aimed at establishing cooperation between the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin and Laugarnesskóli in Reykjavik, Iceland, in terms of learning about the Icelandic educational system, the core curriculum and the way it is implemented at the level of early childhood education (grades 1-4). In addition, of interest to the participants of the Visit are the proposed solutions, especially the ways of practical implementation of the idea of inclusion of expatriate families in the local community, including learning about the principles of organizing it from both the program and educational, as well as administrative and legal sides. The visit to Laugarnesskóli in Reykjavik provided an opportunity to establish inter-institutional contacts. The grantee reported that the main objectives of the visit were achieved 100%. Participants were introduced to Icelandic methods and curricula dedicated to students from expatriate families. On the first day of the visit, there was a scheduled meeting with the teaching staff of Laugarnesskóla, during which the Icelandic education system was presented, including professional preparation for work in schools, the model of early childhood education teacher training, requirements, tasks and responsibilities were presented. The participants of the visit presented the teacher training system and the general educational system in place in Poland, with comments on its history, culture and prevailing customs. In addition, the participants of the visit met at the Department of Education with Magdalena Elísabet Andrésdóttir, a Polish-speaking language and cultural mediator, who presented a program for integrating immigrant students and families into the culture and education system in Iceland. Day two and three, as planned, were based on observation of educational activities in individual classes (1-4) and discussions with teachers about their experiences, challenges, successes in their work, and sharing their reflections and methodological remarks.  There were also meetings with students of Polish descent and their parents, who shared their experiences of acclimatization in new educational conditions. There was a change in the composition of the participants of the visit, which was reported to FRSE by email on April 11, 2022. Despite the timely modifications to the project, the project schedule itself remained unchanged.
