Description

The project works with young people from Roma community (Luník IX, which is Slovakia´s most famous Roma settlement. For the young people, living here is almost impossible to change their lives and break out of poverty). These young people are interested in engaging in second-chance education because they never got a chance to learn as the children from majority. In the framework of the project the youth from the minority will creating a local newspaper - quarterly with the working title "Nine lives!". The content of which will form young people (from Roma communities) as responsible editors, in cooperation with professionals (invited journalists, graphic designers, artists). The joint activities will be informed through social media. This fragment of the project will improve the reading literacy, the ability of critically-thinking, and other skills needed for the labour market and life. It is important for the Roma children because they have no information and mostly none or only a little education. On the other hand, the project also focuses on education regarding the creation and administration of projects.

The aim is the training of young people to help them change their own life and take responsibility for themselves. The project is also focusing on removing the barriers and prejudices against the inhabitants of Luník IX. At the same time is trying to make the youth from this environment had the initiative to stand out from their environment and change their life for better.

Summary of project results

The main goal of the project was to show that there are many talented children and successful young people in Luník IX, which is a disctrict of the Košice city where mainly Roma people live. The task of the project was to bring the life of the Roma in the Luník IX housing estate closer to the people and, through creative, artistic activities, to show that they have a place in our society and that they do not pose a threat, as many people think. Through music and events, the project presented the joy of life.

The top moment of the project was the Christmas bazaar in December 2019, a few days after the gas explosion of a block of flats in Prešov. Proceeds were donated to the victims of this disaster through a transparent account. Second hand clothes, books and various things were sold at Luník IX for a voluntary contribution donated by private donors. The band Gipsy Boys also performed at the event. An improvised stand with refreshments - coffee and tea - was also set up. This whole community event was organized by the youth concentrated in the project Nine Lives!
The project managed to train 119 people in order to strengthen them economically. 119 people were direct recipients of the improved services provided and around 4,000 benefited from empowerment measures.
