Description

The project will address the issue of public transport in Novo mesto that is established, but is not developed to it's fullest potential. The projects aims to encourage its use and indirectly address environmental issues, as well as support active citizenship. It will include all key stakeholders – the municipality, the bus transport companies and public. The expected outcome after the project, is a larger participation in public transport, which will be achieved by addressing initiatives and direct activities, namely urban interventions on various bus stops in cooperation with the local community.

Summary of project results

In full awareness that the issue of development of City Public Transport in Novo Mesto is a multi-faceted challenge that requires a comprehensive activity of the local government, NGO recognized the opportunities for action in the field they operate: through the promotion of active citizenship and public participation at the local level. On one hand beneficiary tried to put the theme of under-developed public transport system into the limelight, on the other hand they encouraged municipal authorities to search for the possibilities for further development of CPT NM. The project operated in three different levels. Based on analysis of the available documents and the methods of management of CPT NM, Est=etika learned about the existing situation and on this basis formulated three suggestions for improving the issues and addressed them to the local government. With the intention of improvement of management of public transportation, NGO suggested the extension of the objectives of the document Sustainable Urban Strategy Novo mesto 2030: to include the document Integrated Transport System Strategy for its long-term planning. The local government accepted the proposal. Activities on second level tried to put the accent on the theme of Public Transport in local media and advertising. Amongst other activities the NGO prepared advertising campaign »City Bus is a luxury« and public talk »Where does the bus drive us? «. Most publicly exposed were the urban interventions at three selected bus stops, which were carried out by different groups of the population: Bus stop Ločna with children from Kosovo (Daily Centre of the Association for the Development of Voluntary Work Novo mesto), Bus stop Sevno with high school pupils (Agricultural school) and Bus stop mali Slatnik with informal community of designers (DesignON) and local community Mali Slatnik. Long concrete wall at the Bus stop Ločna was painted with the graffiti »rosettes«, Bus Stop at Sevno got a long wooden bench with greenery, Bus stop at Mali Slatnik was completely renovated: leeking roof was repaired, walls were sanded, plastered and painted, new wooden bench and information board were installed. Local resident painted the exterior and installed the waste bin by their own initiative after the workshop.
