MARINE LEXICON is a bilateral cooperation project, between Portugal and Norway, aiming at the joint construction of a thesaurus of European common names of marine mammals (cetaceans, seals and sea lions, and sirenian) and elements represented in the early modern age (sea monsters, hybrid beings, folklore). This funding will allow the establishment and reinforcement of networking and research in historical whaling, sealing, and marine mammals’ appropriation, trade and use from prehistoric times up to the medieval and the early modern period (15th-18th centuries).

Summary of the results
Following the results-based management approach, the initiative aimed to building a searchable digital platform on marine mammals and their various names throughout history, with names throughout history, with special focus on the 15th to 18th centuries.
The platform contains names, images and sounds, available in Portuguese, English and Norwegian and resources in 14 different languages. In addition to animals, the Marine Lexicon platform popular folklore, such as mermaids, monsters and unicorns. unicorns.
Among the activities carried out we highlight not only the launching of the platform, but also the participation in international conferences and the organization of a public workshop.
