Description

The Dacian fortresses from Orăștie Mountains represent the only ancient monuments from Romania that are within UNESCO World Heritage List. The main objectives of the project are to digitize at least 500 artefacts, to virtually reconstruct Dacian architectural vestiges from Orăștie Mountains and to promote them to national and international levels. The objects and monuments that will be digitized will represent the initial assets for the two exhibition spaces that will be newly created for the project partners: The National History Museum of Transylvania and Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization from Deva. An immediate result will be the access of general public to quality information, which will increase the interest regarding heritage assets and especially Dacian heritage assets. Easy access to the cultural products of the project will be a factor that will stimulate the development of cultural tourism. On a long term, it will stimulate the authorities that administrate the areas where the Dacian fortresses are located to implement similar projects to promote the Dacian cultural heritage.

Summary of project results

The project’s idea was generated by the need to make known to the public an exceptional archaeological and historical heritage in an accessible and modern way. Results of the project, historical/archaeological heritage specific to Dacian sites from Orăștie Mountains (on UNESCO list since 1999), are available to the general public and specialists around the world. This is possible through the dissemination of cultural products of the project, which are available online (digitized artifacts, virtual museum) and physical (two specialized exhibitions and printed catalogue). The contextualization with specialized information monuments and digitized artifacts responds to the need of the general public for knowledge of the cultural heritage, of antiquity, especially the Dacian culture, and generates a positive attitude towards cultural heritage. The project has generated the following deliverables: a database of 500 digitized artifacts with metadata, of ancient techniques, and monuments that were the subject of the project, 30 digitally reconstructed architectural monuments, two newly arranged exhibition spaces, a virtual museum, three virtual tours and custom augmented reality application for the Dacian monuments and artifacts, and nine scientific communications. The general public, the main beneficiary of the project results has access to significant items of an exceptional heritage and historical-archaeological information relating to artifacts and monuments, which, due to project implementation, have become more accessible than ever before.
